Now....isn't this one of those states with no income tax? Why should the rest of the country be responsible for repairing the damage they accrue? Shouldn't the people that choose to live there be responsible for this? At least...the majority of it? I really don't get this mentality....give money to people that will get wiped out again ...give money to rebuild in a floodplain....give money to rebuild in a fire zone....give money to rebuild after a hurricane. Is it any wonder that the States that get hit most by hurricanes all are Republican run states? Help us help us poor us....

Now, I have no issue helping a State rebuild if they match funds. That's what a nation should do. But as it is....aren't we just rewarding bad behavior?

It's going to have to be the insurance industry that puts a stop to the bizarre policy of encouraging people to move to a state that's going to be substantially under water (even when there aren't hurricanes) by the end of the century.

I generally agree that property insurance rates should more accurately reflect the potential damage risks of hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and earthquakes. To some degree that seems to be occurring. But when people see houses underwater on their TV screens, the prevailing emotion among most is sympathy. Few people worry about who pays. Case in point: New Orleans brought much of the damage from Katrina upon itself through years of infrastructure neglect and failure to plan for evacuation during the days and hours before the storm.

To some degree that seems to be occurring. But when people see houses underwater on their TV screens, the prevailing emotion among most is sympathy. Few people worry about who pays. Case in point: New Orleans brought much of the damage from Katrina upon itself through years of infrastructure neglect and failure to plan for evacuation during the days and hours before the storm.

And New Orleans has used those Federal funds to prevent...or least try to prevent...that from happening again. And as far as I know...Louisiana has a state income tax...that part of which covers disasters. Now....do they spend money where they should? No....look at the ExxonMobil spill. They sure do love that tax base but they didn't use one dollar to set up a system to cover in case of a disaster. Florida has no income tax and uses their money to hire private planes to send documented asylum seekers from Texas to Massachusetts. Seems to me....they have plenty of money.
