Cynthia - bored 45 year old married stay-at-home mother of 4, ages 7 to 13, is on vacation in Arizona with family. (Her husband has been barely there in the bedroom lately, and when she suggests they have another baby he adamantly opposes the idea.) She wants to go on a copper mine tour. Husband and kids don’t wanna (So boring, Mom!”) so she goes on her own.
Casey - 28 year old tattooed thrill-seeker (think x-games, base jumper, skydiver) is also on the tour, walking next to her. Sees a roped-off tunnel marked DANGER! DO NOT ENTER! so of course he wants to. He grabs Cynthia by the hand and says, “Hey, want to take a minute and check that out? Ten minutes, tops, then we can walk fast and catch up with the group!”
Thrilled to be doing something forbidden with a handsome young stranger, she goes with him. As they explore the tunnel, it’s plain to see the aged tunnel supports have not been upgraded like they have been in the safe areas. As they go deeper into the tunnel there’s a slight earth tremor, and the supports collapse behind and ahead of them. They are now trapped together in an underground pocket! It’s tall enough to stand up in, about 20 feet from end to end. Air is getting through, but no light.
The only light they have is from the hard hat battery lights. The only food is a few energy bars and crackers from Cynthia’s mom-purse. There’s water from Casey’s half-gallon-sized hiking flask in his backpack. They’re thinly dressed for Arizona heat, but it’s cool underground. Then the batteries run low, and their helmet lights begin to dim...
