it already has collins (Maine) and portman (Ohio) (whose own son came out as gay 2 years ago which changed the senator's mind on some things) behind it, and tillis (NC) as a probable.

support to codify the bill will all come down to 4 things:

personal experience/involvement with people this bill might affect (friends, family)
the will/desire/capacity for violence their voting constituents
their expectations or fears of a trump rerun
whether or not they'll be standing themselves for re-election

They will never get 10 votes...ever. Why? Because they don't care

If Butters starts calling Republican Senators now, surely they’ll understand and help homos get married.

After all, it’s Butters.

if enough of their constituents have gay offspring whom they love and want to be/have got married, or if they/their children/ friends are in interracial relationships, it's an area of conflicted interests... the bottom line for most politicians (i'd say) is to get re-elected. If they go directly against a pro-codify votership thinking their jobs depend on trump's election, they lose the chance of being elected anyway.

the senator whose son is gay is not standing for re-election, so he's 'safe' to add his vote for pro. when senators do what's best for themselves over what's right for the country (in their minds) they do the country a terrible disservice.

The Constitution doesn't give Congress the right to decide the issue. Marriage is an issue that has always been decided by the states. Gay marriage is not an issue that is under threat in any state.

80% of this nation's GDP. Democratic States have the power to change this. Sooner they grow some balls and leave the union...the shorter the time this remains an issue. Why should we keep paying for Republican states? One reason. One. Should be easy.

Not going to relocate. Where you going to get the money to pay for your benefits after Democratic States leave? Tick tock....it will happen.
If Sodomy ends the USA, it gets what’s coming. :)

so what do the dems in seceded gop states do if they can't afford to move or love where they and their families live and work? same goes for what do you do with the gop voters in the same position in seceded dem states? do the state governors help them relocate to their 'teams' respective states if they want to? what about the disruption it would create in supply and demand, the ability of businesses to trade as normal between states and so on... it's not simple.

There should be a Political Slow Learners Lounge for threads like this.

Republican senators absolutely do not want to vote on this, especially guys like Johnson who are running again this fall (and Wisconsin is non-wingnut enough that their other senator is a lesbian). They would prefer not to go on the record either way.

Fortunately for them, the opposing party is allergic to the practice of hardball politics and might just let them off the hook.

It is exactly that simple. Is there an issue with existing commerce between countries? How about Canada? Mexico? Issues with commerce? Give the power to the States to decide their future.

Houses, businesses are bought and sold every single day. Any issues with those transactions?

If a person wishes to live under Fascist rule....that's on them.

Or we can contine the Butters path and sit around the campfire and sing kumbiya and pretend you can fix a broken system.

Cancer sucks. There is no easy way to fight it. You must sacrifice some to save what you can.

What small minded people keep refusing to understand...it is about choice. It doesn't mean states will leave. What it does, is give an option not presently on the table. It FORCES both sides to evaluate...can we survive without them? Do we want to let them go? Or do we listen to their complaints and compromise? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. When do people accept reality?

^^^ There's a place called South Georgia. You'd like it there.

Go today.

^^^^Perfect example of why inbreeding really isn't a good thing in humans

how good of you to be willing to sacrifice others

as for 'the Butters path'... really?

why is it that the more people express their extreme views, the more they seem to get pissed at me? just wonderin', not bothered by it.

you do you, dribble, and i can only hope there are enough level heads to prove your predictions wrong. you may be right, but i choose to have hope while fostering positive action.

Hey...I am not pissed at you. It does aggravate me those so unwilling to look at other options have nothing to add except hope' and prayers. Come up with something better. I will listen. But I am a realist. I don't wait around planning how to fix something 10 years from now. See....it will take 10 years to answer the questions. So start the process. Give us another option other than what we have...a totally dysfunctional Federal system. Show me one leader from either Party that will lead. Not suck the dick of those really in power

Passive aggresive Butters victimhood at its finest.

The others aren’t extreme.

You’re just a simpleton who thinks she knows the “true way”.

Hubris does however create nemesis.

so far the yeses are:
Johnson and Tillis, Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Rob Portman (R-OH), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) are all on the record saying that they plan to vote for the Respect for Marriage Act.

Additional GOP senators who are seen as possible supporters of the bill include Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), and Joni Ernst (R-IA), among others.

75-year old south carolina's governer, mcmaster, vows to do away with same sex marriages in S.C if SCOTUS protections are overturned:

In response to his anti-marriage equality stance, The State reported former Congressman Cunningham “seemed surprised by the governor’s answer, issuing a ‘wow’ to his response.”

“It’s 2022 and Gov. McMaster wants to ban same-sex marriage,” Cunningham said. “Gov. McMaster has been a politician, literally longer than I’ve been alive. He’s been taking our state backwards the entire time. Gov. McMaster has been leading South Carolina into the 1950s since 1980s.”
