The bipartisan group, led by GOP Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, began talks in January on an election reform bill mainly focused on giving a 21st-century upgrade to the Electoral Count of 1887, the once-obscure 19th-century law governing the process of counting Electoral College votes in a joint session of Congress.
The bill, senators told Politico, clarifies that the vice president's role in overseeing the counting of electoral votes is solely ministerial and ceremonial.

It will also raise the threshold for members of Congress to bring an objection to a state's slate of electors beyond one House member and one senator, clear up the definition of a "failed election" in federal law, prevent fake and phony slates of electors to Congress, and call on the US Postal Service to come up with standards and practices for handling mail-in ballots, according to Politico.

Since those two are involved I doubt they will produce anything effective.
maybe, maybe not... i trust manchin only so far as his self-interests are concerned.

the thing here, as i see it, is that without such guarantees, BOTH sides of the Senate will be concerned: dems don't want to ever see trump or a trump-inspired loser creating a repeat of jan 6th, and reps must be aware (surely?) that without the guarantees there'd be nothing to prevent VP Kamala Harris from declaring President Biden still in power even if he lost. Chaos on both sides, and most voters don't sit well with that.

Across the polls there's a clear waning of support for trump as it climbs for other rep candidates. Rep senators (the majority) are sick of kowtowing to trump and his bullies, afraid to cast votes in the manner they normally would for threats from the extreme reps in their states, and desire nothing more than for t to be out of the picture. If it can be achieved by the committee then the DOJ, they cannot be held to blame by their maga constituents; if it can't, then this bill would help blunt t's power. They'll probably be more behind desantis than any other candidate, ignoring the dangers of his own stance because he, at least, is an actual politician. Their desire to be rid of the extremist crazies is real, with the exception of those few who are crazy-arsed bastards themselves.

building on the manchin/collins work, a bill sponsored by Cheney and Lofgren may be considered by the House as early as next week:

"The Select Committee has been considering legislative recommendations based on its findings concerning the January 6 attack and will share those soon," the two lawmakers said. "These will include a bipartisan approach to the Electoral Count Act."

One of those recommendations was to make it harder for members of Congress to raise objections to the electoral votes of a given state when it meets in a joint session to count the votes. Under current law, only one lawmaker from the House and one from the Senate is needed to object, and Lofgren’s report recommended that one third of all members of both the House and Senate would be needed to object.

Lofgren’s report also called for language to narrow the role the vice president plays when electoral votes are counted. It said the vice president should not preside over the joint session of Congress, and should have no procedural say in the process. That language reflects complaints from Democrats and some Republicans that former President Trump urged then-Vice President Mike Pence to challenge the electoral count.

That's a pair you can trust. They literally picked the most for sale member of either party to head this.

Wouldn't it be something to find out that NO ONE has been stealing elections? That 2016 was legit, and 2020 legit?

I think this is pre-emptive to stop the squealing if the GOP flip one or both groups in the mid terms. Or conversely if they don't.

But again both of these clowns have literally put their votes on anything up for auction. Guess whoever lines their pockets wins their election

It doesn't matter who "leads it"...it matters what the legislation says
Also 2016 and 2020 were both legit

The House on Wednesday approved a post-Jan. 6 election reform bill intended to blunt future challenges to presidential elections.

The Presidential Election Reform Act, crafted largely by Reps. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., and Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., passed by a 229-203 vote, with nine Republicans joining the Democratic majority in favor of it.

The House bill is also competing with Senate legislation crafted after bipartisan talks that included Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va, and Susan Collins, R-Maine.

The two bills are similar, though the Senate legislation sets a lower threshold to introduce objections to the electoral count.
