Because diversity is not a source of strength, but of social discord. The growing diversity of the American population is the reason for the polarization that makes it difficult for us do deal with problems that would have been manageable before 1964.

Slavery only benefited the minority of whites who were rich enough to afford to buy slaves. Family farms could not compete with plantations. Every profession and skilled trade paid more in the North than in the South. Most immigrants moved to the North because that is where the opportunities were.
No, slave labor was often used for public projects, with government agencies leasing slaves to build roads, bridges and public facilities. The Capitol and the White House were built with slave labor.
Then why were there more economic opportunities in the free states? Why did the industrial revolution happen in the North?
The time I really wanted to move to China was the time from the death of Mao Tse Tung in 1976 to the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. Back then I thought China was evolving in the direction of a democratic country. I wanted my descendants to be in China five hundred years from now. I still love Chinese people and the Chinese culture, but I do not like the dictatorship there.
