What was this thread about?....oh yeah ADHD...support group? šŸ˜…

I sometimes struggle to fall asleep but mostly I'm a sleeper. It's a huge need for me. If I don't know how to cope or what to do, I go to sleep.

I've been working on my sleep hygiene habits. No devices after dinner. I shower in the dark.

Mo is right, these phones we're on are making our lives harder if we're not intentionally throwing up boundaries to protect ourselves. Sleep is one of the most important things to me and I fight hard to make sure I get it. (My kids fight back hard to ensure I'm sleep deprived 😭).
I actually use the ā€œSleep Healthā€ function on my iPhone. It’s a good reminder for me, turns off my notifications, etc.

During the pandemic, I slept a LOT! Anxiety? Sleep. Depression? Sleep. ADD triggered lack of motivation? Sleep.

Iā€˜m starting to turn the corner a bit now, but motivation is still huge for me. Especially if there’s other ways to pleasurably pass the time…

My phone has that and then I'd keep using my phone in black and white šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Also i turned it off and don't know how to get it to work again

Have you ever been to therapy or have you/would you consider it? I wonder if working on these things with a therapist would help
I haven't been for therapy as yet, I dont have my diagnosis yet. We've only just got my daughters diagnosis and begun the road to therapy with her in time for her step up to secondary (high school). I'm next on the list. Maybe things will start to develop a little for me once the formal stuff is in place. I'm certainly not against therapy.

All this talk of sleep and device use.....it's late here, just finished work and I need my bed. ā¤ļøšŸ’¤

I do put my shoes on as soon as I get up in the morning... so I have that going for me..
I never thought about that bc I'm always barefoot at home or with my inside sandals.

I wonder if going to the office is going to help my productivity.

For me what helps me the most is doing to do lists

Brings back a memory of putting my 5 yo son to bed. It was hard wrangling him in in AM so he would get dressed for school. So I started making him get dressed the night before and sleeping in his clothes. No socks or shoes though. This didn't last long. He realized what he needed to do in the AM's for school. :)

Has anyone been given an explanation for causes and how ADHD presents?

Some effects are what I suspect to be the symptoms and others could be the effects. I feverishly studied many different mental health issues when my oldest son got arrested on a 5150 (dangerous to himself and others) when he was twelve. He was officially diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and oppositional defiance disorder, but it took a lot of digging and study to reach that conclusion - one that he agrees with even 13 years later.

As for ADHD...
Is depression the result of insecurity based on constant self analysis? Is it from over-thinking situations and fretting about missed opportunities, dissatisfaction with living situations? Not everyone with ADHD has depression, I've known musicians and artists who can channel it for creativity, though honestly they weren't necessarily happy all the time...

Some people have hyper-motor control issues as the result of their diets. I've known parents of ADHD kids who saw a complete turn around in their kids when they started the Feingold diet.
https://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/childhood-adhd/what-is-the-feingold-diet Really, check it out. My wife was a Waldorf preschool teacher who witnessed several families struggling with ADHD change their diets and find relief.

My father had a sensitivity to corn that made him hyperactive and agitated. If he avoided corn products including corn syrup he did well and had great amounts of patience. I have lots of environmental allergies, a lot of them effect my breathing and make me feel jittery and agitated, discovering that lavender is one of them and avoiding it greatly improved my life.
My youngest son, 13, is adhd. Anxiety is a part of the symptoms, generally due to over thinking. Of course disorganization, messy room, not completing a task. it's down right hell. He was tested and diagnosed in 1st grade. Decided to put him on
meds during school, made a huge difference. All A symtudent. Draw backs to meds, sleep deprivation and appetite suppressed. He wants the meds and also takes begire sports activities in order to concentrate. We have to learn to be patient, lots of patience.

I didn’t get diagnosed until a few years ago (after I turned 50). I showed what are now known as classic ADHD symptoms even back as a kid. Back then no one knew what ADHD was, and we were classified as ā€œlazy students ā€œ. It got worse as I got older, until I diagnosed myself and asked my PCP to have me screened. Sure enough, I was correct. I had to wait for treatment until after I got my depression under control, but now I take Adderall on work days, and it really makes a difference. I also found that I could improve my focus by listening to loud music.

Trying to get on Adderall for work too. I have to listen to music when I'm working, it def helps ke focus! Once I get going I'm usually ok but getting started is hard lol

Adderall is one of the medications that scares the crap out of me. I try to take it as infrequently as I can. I made a 1 month supply last 3. It does work extremely well though.

Ritalin did nothing for me.

Me too! Any controlled substance does! But I'd do the same as you. Just take it as "needed"

Right! I’m supposed to be taking 2/day. I only take 1, M-F. I don’t even do that sometimes. When I need it, I do need it.

Back in the 80’s when was about 16, I read an article in the newspaper about all the symptoms of ADHD. It was new then. I said to my parents, ā€œHey, this is me!ā€ (Except for the ā€œhyperactivityā€. Hyperactive kids and people were off the charts hyperactive back then…one I knew was very likely on the autism spectrum.)

Anyway, my Dad blew it off. ā€œIt’s made up and your not hyperactive.ā€œ I think mom knew but didn’t have the money to send me for treatment. My hyperactivity was actually the level of my voice…VERY loud.

So I was ā€œlazy, underachieving, no self confidence, need to work harder, pay attention in class, stop daydreaming.ā€

Deadbed, I now recall having to get my depression under control, then ADHD. Finally added bipolar disorder to the mix.

I think an ADHD support group just got started here. On an erotic stories web site. Who would have ever thought that would happen? šŸ¤”

That’s what I take. It’s supposed to be good for about 4 hours, but I find (at least in my case) that the effects last much longer.

Yup, same here. I was 16 in 1985 (well, end of 84). My dad didn’t lean on me too much since he was an awful student himself. Hyperactivity wasn’t as much a problem for me as the lack of focus. My grades were still pretty good. My teachers would say ā€œhe’s not living up to his potentialā€.

I went to a vocational school for high school, and that seemed to improve the situation. I was more interested in what I was learning. College was better still, again because the subjects held my interest. The ADHD didn’t really cause me issues again until I got older. I find the older I get, the more difficult it is to stay focused.

I always put things off to the last minute…then and now. Reading was and some cases still is tough.

I was dealing with depression first, then basically career counseling. It affected a lot of interpersonal relationships. But I’m getting better. And still making adjustments to this day.

I started taking Celexa about 14 years ago, but it stopped working for me about 5 years ago. I then spent 2+ years monkeying with different meds. I also discovered I was suffering from hypogonadism. My testosterone levels were off the low end of the chart. So between getting that squared away, getting the right SNRI (Cymbalta), and getting my ADHD treated, I’m in a pretty good place. I’m a walking pharmacy though 🤣.

I’m a walking pharmacy myself! Diabetes doesn’t help, either!
