I don't think so. I was hoping a sweep would nudge my score over the 4.5 line but instead seems to have recieved a number of score-lowering votes over the past 12-hours or so and am back into the 4.3s.

I think so, I saw two of my stories lose a vote each, but I also saw my view count spike up, which is odd for the middle of the week.

Yeah, now that I'm watching, I think it might just be the usual "market volatility." The real sweeps are still a ways away.

Ok, even though I've been here a while I'm new at hanging stories out to view. What are "real sweeps" and are they scheduled?

There is usually an end of the month (really around the 15 of the next month to give stories equal time) for the monthly contests. And then the end of the contest sweep which uses the big broom.

Ah, we don't speak of the sweep. They mysteriously happen when least expected and are rumoured to delete dodgy votes of all persuasions. How is that determined? My guess is a crystal ball guarded by HP's dragon in the basement.

I just noticed two votes disappear and the rating of my story shot up... I think someone replaced the batteries in the crystal ball.

Some of that is normal give-and-take that happens with almost every story. I think there are mini-sweeps that take care of things like duplicate votes with little fanfare.

The Really Deep Sweeps happen much more periodically, maybe one or two times during the course of the contest and then again RIGHT before the end.

My better-performing story burped by like .02 or so. It's scoring about like I expected it would.

My worse-performing story, from which massive score volatility can be expected (it's got fewer than 30 votes), took a BIG jump. As in, more of a jump than I feel it deserves. I'll look for it to regress back toward its mean soon.

Not sure how many votes got sliced. I can never remember the counts.

Looked to me like the sweep went through in two stages - I got two votes taken off just before I went to bed and another two votes when I woke up. Anyway, enough to move my story finally into the H catagory which is obviously where it belonged all along...

Still, I got a bit paranoid - what's to stop someone going through and 1*ing the competitors.

This is my first competition and I'm not sure it's doing my mental health any good.

Welcome to the AH, Chris. I bet you check your score every ten minutes and panic when it suddenly drops. Unfortunately, that's the way it is here. As Keith implied, there is nothing to prevent carpet bombing of competitors, or pumping up favourites. There's a lot of trust in the system. It's nowhere near perfect, but as long as you accept the limitations, it's not too bad here.

Certainly for a mug writer like me.
