One of the first things the Palestinian government would NOT do would be to build their infrastructure, or develop an agricultural or industrial base.

At one point the Israeli government did try to grant the Palestinian occupied territories some autonomy but what happened was exactly as described above.

It seems like the only clear solution would be a unified Arab-Israeli state where NEITHER Israel or Palestine exists, but instead a single state with a secular government and constitution guaranteeing equal civil rights, administered and overseen by a foreign power. Which is exactly what existed there prior to 1948. And which (for a number of reasons) is unlikely to work in the modern era.

I don't believe that for a moment. Think about it from their POV. They've finally got their chance to build their own infrastructure, etc., and they're going to waste it on a war they can't win, and in which no other Arab state is likely to intervene this time?

I don't know. The press...the news we get is very biased. Back then...our Govt fed a story and we believed it. Same as with Vietnam...or Afghanistan...I would like to know the truth...is what we were told the truth?

I sympathise with the plight of ordinary Palestinians and deplore some of the excesses of the IDF, the police, and the Palestinian leadership . But the Palestinians will never get anything, anything at all, until the Arab and Moslem world recognizes Israel's right to exist. That will not happen, substantially because Palestinian leadership (such as it is) is utterly and totally corrupt. They make millions for themselves, their families, and close allies, and couldn't care less about ordinary Palestinians.

Meanwhile other nations like Saudi Arabia and Iran have no real interest in Palestine and just regard it as a convenient stick to beat the Israelis and US with. The current situation is probably as good as it will be for the foreseeable future.

But that would mean the UVF who are still heavily armed, attacking the unified government throughout Ireland. The Good Friday agreement is very fragile. Any serious move towards a United Ireland could be very bloody, as the Continuing IRA demonstrate daily.

The fact that the UVF has not responded in kind is because their leaders accept control is better. But if Ireland were united, the UVF commanders could not hold back the anger of their 'soldiers'.

The hatred runs deep and the Continuing IRA are determined to keep it alive.

The Israelis will eventually push the Palestinians out, and annex the land they conquered in the 1967 Six Day War. The Palestinians are nothing without the support of other Arabs. All Israel needs to do is to convince the Arab countries that it is in their interest to have good relations with Israel, and to ignore the Palestinians.
