It's actually an interesting district because the biggest population center in it is Asheville, which leans left, and it's tough to gerrymander because it's at the far west end of the state. It's usually a swing district, which is why a nutbag like Cawthorn was a bad fit for it. The area is a weird mix of hippies, "normal" suburbanites, retirees, mountain folk with very deep roots, Billy Graham devotees, and crazy bastards who are the spiritual descendants of Andrew Jackson.
 
The latter. I don’t know anything about Edwards but Cawthorn is a certified nut job.

I mean, as far as Cawthorn, I feel bad for the guy. Or would, had he not gotten mixed up in politics. It sounds like he suffered horribly after his accident and became a broken person. I suspect some of his line of thinking may be a partial result of his trauma, but still, the fact is, his ideas that he is campaigning under, like those of Marjorie Taylor Greene and Idaho's own dishonorable Janice McBitchen, have no place in a decent, civilized, free and democratic society.
 
I guess the voters showed up at the polls after all, Jim Crow 2.0 notwithstanding...
 
Interestingly, the white nationalist anti-immigration site VDARE is named after Virginia Dare of the lost colony of Roanoke -- the first English person recorded to have been born in what is now the U.S. The colony was in NC (not to be confused with Roanoke, Virginia). Its people were probably absorbed into the local Lumbee Indians -- I've passed through the area and noticed that unlike most Indians, many of them have gray eyes.

The American melting pot is that old.

The effectiveness of this tactic depends on if there's a plausible conservative alternative. Cawthorn was only beatable — and it was just barely — because the guy running against him promised the same general voting record, with fewer gay pantomime videos and awestruck selfies at Nazi historic sites.

The so-called “Dark MAGA” movement calls for Trump to return to power in order to exact revenge on his enemies. It began as a campaign posting threatening Terminator-style memes on social media, but has now gained popularity among some of Trump’s prominent supporters such as Greene, as Insider explained last week. Earlier this month, Greene tweeted a meme in line with the “Dark MAGA” esthetic, which often depicts Trump in black and red-tinted images with laser beams coming out of his eyes.
