Its GDP is no larger than Spain's. During the Cold War it was easy to blame that on the economic inefficiency of the Communist system -- but that system was dismantled in the 1990s. Why is Russia still poor?

Because Putin and the Oligarchy is so rich....🤣

But, I get your question.....it is too dependent on resource wealth and doesn't have enough exportable services or products. Add into this Putin's rejection of Western style commerce and how tht filters through the society....it all equates to a poor country.

But there is no obvious reason why Russia could not have a highly developed industrial economy. Japan does, and their endowment of natural resources is much poorer.

So, from personal experience....try working with some Russians...they are difficult to work with. Culturally, significantly different than in the West. Also, alcoholism is widespread and tolerated like it's somewhat normal.

But nobody ever called them lazy. Russians are known for astounding feats of production.

Have they ever really recovered from the losses of WW2?

The Japanese and the Germans have -- and the Russians were on the winning side.
But has Russia? How many men did they lose? 2 generations worth? Did this allow for the system they have?

Wealth comes from free markets, free exchange of ideas, and free citizens. Russia is 0-3 on those fronts. This ain't rocket science.

You would think Putin's position would easily be a thing people see in opposition to America, but apparently certain dipshits believe party negates country

They really should just print more cash. That's what we do. And when we have to pay the interest on that debt, we just print more cash. But, the cash we print has less value for some reason, so we have to print even more of it, but that's okay, because it's all on a spreadsheet and we just keep adding zeroes. Keep on printin'!

Or some form of labor.
The Labor Theory of Value is dumb. Your sweat and toil do not make a thing more valuable. The thing itself is what has the value, and some things require more labor than others. The amount of effort put into bringing an item to the marketplace has no bearing on it's value to consumers.

Because they didn't learn their lesson from communism.

Like you they thought "capitalism and corporate fascism are the SAME EXACT THING!!!" so they thought they would give iron fisted "crony capitalism" (not capitalism at all) a try.

Centrally controlled and collectivistic economies don't work very well. Oligarchical, corporate, communist.

I'm going to say something that will upset you and other Democrats as much as it would upset Putin/Xi/Kim and Maduro.

You have to take your bootheel off the throats of the people for an economy to flourish. Totalitarian control freak Karen types like yourselves are BAD at micromanaging entire economies.

Yes, they are. And very pragmatic. The Russians did way better at the Start after the fall of the Soviet Union. They had a few difficult years then they really were headed in a great economic direction, until Putin, then it went away for good.

The cold war is a significant factor that differentiates Russia from German and Japan. Rightly or wrongly, they sought their own path separate from the West and the funding to rebuild and acceptance in the west of them. It plays a significant role.

* The Rule of Law is weak in Russia
* Property rights are weak in Russia
* Economic freedom is low in Russia
* There is no independent judiciary in Russia
* The Russian population is collapsing

Corruption. If it weren't so damn cold, it'd be a Banana Republic.

Economically Russia is no more important than the wealth of Belgium and the Netherlands combined. They are a major player in the world because of their nuclear weapons arsenal. Those weapons alone give them peer consideration with the strongest militaries on earth, especially with a leader like Putin who has already threatened their use. Otherwise, they are by and large a third-world nation. We see hints of this playing out in Ukraine. They have a big military, but as we now see it's poorly led, its equipment of inferior quality, its logistical command is inadequate to its advance. Russia's comms suck as well, none seem to be encrypted and are being monitored and spoofed by the Ukrainians. Their much-vaunted air force has failed to achieve air superiority over the battlefield. Their flights are two to four aircraft at a time, many times single aircraft have been seen over the battlefield. Their pilots typically get only 30-40% of the flight training hours as those in Nato countries. On another battlefield against a tier-one opponent, their air defenses and communications would be taken down on day one. that 40-mile convoy sitting on that road would be gone in a single day. Russian aircraft wouldn't be able to enter the battlespace. The same overwhelming force Saddam's armored forces met, the Russians would meet. But, there's one reason why this would not happen, that Russian nuclear arsenal and the man mad enough to use it. He's playing us quite well.
