More than 140 Republican leaders and ex-officials from the bipartisan Renew America Movement denounced the RNC on Monday for censuring Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, "condemning two principled elected leaders while condoning conspiracies, lies, and violent insurrection.”

The list of signers is eclectic – Never Trumpers and no-longer Trumpers, conservatives and moderates, strategists and onetime public servants, former senators and House members, and former Govs. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, Christie Todd Whitman of New Jersey and William Weld of Massachusetts.

“How could we be here, where what is the obvious truth by any measure is being conveyed as non-truth by a governing body of a major political party?” Sanford wondered. The censure of Cheney and Kinzinger, he told me in an interview, is like “something out of George Orwell or a really bad sci-fi movie.”

This is just the latest manifestation of an internal struggle that has been going on in the GOP at least since the Tea Party emerged.

Best thing for the country is if the Tea Party/Trumper side definitively and permanently loses. I cannot say "is purged" because the American party system has no mechanism for expelling members.

Dude the Lincoln Project was a grift from the get-go. The ads didn't do anything and the whole project was a sham to separate dopes from their money.

The video linked in this OP studies this point: It works like a rachet. When the Pubs are in power, everything goes their way. But then the Dems are in power, things do not go back the other way. Rather, the Dems respond to Pub obstructionism by moving their own goals and position to the right, as when Obama dropped the "public option" from the ACA before negotiations had even begun. That has happened in every Dem administration since Clinton's, and it hasn't stopped now -- there's nothing in Build Back Better that represents any real move in the direction of social democracy, and no reason for the Pubs to oppose it save that it came from a Democrat.

Yes I understand the left likes to focus on single instances because that supports the obstructionist narrative as we slide slowly but surely left.

Republicans effectively "obstruct" like editors and proof readers "obstruct" literary authors and do nothing the other direction to further any RW anything. They have been for 30ish years a bunch of do-nothing weenies.

Paul was a politician and he was trying to appeal to the populist and moderates.

IMO he wasn't entirely wrong, the "old guard" or establishment GOP left over after the cold war had and still has no fucking clue how to govern. "No, but if you get rid of this and that, maybe." leading to a slow and steady slide left is the very best the (R)'s have offered.

That changed in 2016..... The party of " No....but maybe if you get rid of a few things." (R)'s left over from the 1980's like Mitch and those who support their do nothing weenie style of legislating like Darth Cheney's Daughter? They're rapidly on their way out.
