WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is criticizing the Republican National Committee for censuring two House GOP lawmakers investigating the “violent insurrection” on Jan. 6, 2021, saying it’s not the party’s job to police the views of lawmakers.

If it isn't the party organization's job to police the views of its lawmakers, it should be. We need a more tightly-organized party system in this country, one in which elected officials of both parties take their marching orders from the party as a party. That way you really know what you're voting for when you vote R or D. At present, politicians are essentially independent entrepreneurs, happening to run under this party label or that, and the party platform means no more than what they decide it does.

Yes, when I heard his statement, I certainly saw how double-edged it was. At least he did flatly say Jan 6th was an attempt to prevent a lawful transition of power. Couldn't have been too many different suspects in trying a coup at that point.
