How many of you have multiple alts?

Most of the times, the Political forum as it is now, rocks!
But other times I log in and am faced with a disconcerting uniformity of opinions on both sides.

I used to think that it's because of the political polarization in the US, which doesn't make room for differences. But someone just suggested to me that it's because the same 5 or so posters regurgitate their opinions under different alts.

So who's who?

From my first post on this board, I have been accused of being someone else.

It doesn't matter what I say, people continue to insist that I am an alt.

As far as I can tell, there are only two possible uses for alts. One is to make it look like there are more people with the same opinion on a board. So, this would be employing the bandwagon fallacy. It would be trying to convince people that - look at how many people believe this thing, you should too.

But, as I said, I don't think this actually works. For one, I don't see a whole lot of conversions taking place on this board to begin with. Have you noticed anyone changing political affiliation? So, if people are using alts to achieve this end, then it is failing - no one cares if one opinion or the other has more advocates, it is irrelevant.

The other use for alts is to drown people out. This I actually see happening a lot on this board. Look at all of the posters who essentially drop into a conversation, throw insults, tell the poster to shut up and then bounce. All of the posters who offer no meaningful content or observations to anything, but simply contribute negativity and make the conversation impossible. This is the only use of alts that I think could possibly be effective.

If there are alts on this board, you should look for the people who contribute the least to the conversations. The people who routinely derail debates with negativity and insults. The people who only stir up the waters, make people upset and generally make it their purpose on this board to shit on everything.

Same here. The jeeniuses of the port side insisted that I was BoBo, Vetteman and a few others. They're paranoid, but also mostly in personalities, not facts, so if they can narrow down the number of foes, they can attack those personalities more easily and avoid the underlying arguments.

I have said that I have two other alts - jeanne_d_artois and Fag-Ash-Lil but I only post on the Politics Board as oggbashan.

jeanne is an alt for writing from a different point of view. Fag_Ash-Lil is a character in one of jeanne's stories but both clearly identify themselves as another version of oggbashan.

But I am aware that there are several people on the Politics Board who use multiple alts while NOT identifying that they are the same poster. Surprisingly (or not) they tend to agree with each other and attack others for attacking the first alt used.

No one has accused you of being me.

I'm the only proudly retired Marine who served in 'Nam and retired to sunny San Diego on the board.

You're your own brand of stupid.

So why do you respond to Bobo? Bobo?

I have none.

I don't get the point of alts. Been accused of it several times, though

I honestly think the whole alt thing is more of a way for people to deflect from the topic at hand.

I always ig ore when people accuse me of it.

Again, what is the point of having alts?

Once you answer why, then look around and assess who fits that bill.

I've made my reasoning clear, but you come to your own conclusions.

What purpose could alts serve that one screen name can't?

I've never had an alt on here.

I also don't think any of the people I've seen accused of being an alt of BoBo's really are that. He has an extremely distinctive style (if also an extremely predictable one, accusing the left of hating America in every single post and claiming to be a liberal), and no one else sounds quite the same.

I had to leave the board for a while because Isis was trying to frag me, but I was able to keep my name.

I have 2. One on the left side of the keyboard, and one on the right side. Both of them are right next to the spacebar.

I don't have alt keys...

But I have options and commands at my fingertips.

I feel regal!

Oh gawd, the next thing we know you're going to change your user name to Buttery or something... ;)
