It seems strange that anyone would seriously propound Jewish conspiracy theories in this day and age. But, it is not so long ago that we all heard white nationalists marching in Charlottesville shouting "Jews will not replace us!"

What an odd thing to fear! Jews are about 1.4% of the U.S. population. How could they be numerous enough to replace anybody?

Well, that depends on what you mean by "replace."

Near as I can figure, the theory appears to be that Jews were behind the black civil rights movement, because they want to encourage "race-mixing," because a mixed-race population is stupider than a pure-white population and, therefore, easier for the Jews to control.

Is there anything else in it? Am I missing something?

I live in Charlottesville, and not only was that chant recorded, but the chanters were wearing/holding Nazi symbols and they descended on the town's only Jewish synagogue, chanting that they were going to torch it, and had to be repelled by the police--all caught on tape.

It's the name of a family of languages and their speakers, including Arabs as well as Israelites. But in this context it refers to a political movement that developed in Europe in the 19th Century. Before that time, prejudice against Jews was essentially religious, and a Jew could at least in theory escape it by converting to Christianity. The German name for this was Judenhaas, "Jew-hate." But in the 19th Century a new movement emerged, for which its followers coined the name "antisemitism." This was the idea that Jews, whatever their religious beliefs, were by their hereditary nature evil and manipulative and parasitic, and irredeemably dangerous to all gentiles. It fit in well with the emerging sense of "nations" as at least partly racial entities, extended families -- every form of European nationalism included Jews out -- German Jews were not really German, French Jews were not really French, they were a separate race-nation. It also fit in with the racial pseudoscience of the time, mostly concerned with the inherent mental inferiority of blacks, etc. Jews were not here classified as mentally inferior, rather, as too clever by half.

The kindest thing to be said for antisemitism is that it is extremely silly. Jews are neither as evil nor as powerful as antisemites imagine them to be. No doubt there are some evil Jews and some powerful Jews, but as a group, not so much. After all, they've been taking it on the ear from gentiles for centuries -- why would they put up with that if they had any power?

But to antisemites, apparent powerlessness masks a secret power, a talent for controlling things from behind the scenes, pulling strings. As with any conspiracy theory, the absence of any discoverable evidence in support is taken as evidence of the conspiracy's success.

And that is why, in the 20th Century, Nazis were able to believe in absurdities such as the "international Jewish-Communist conspiracy" -- in fact, they saw Jews as the driving force behind both Communism and capitalism, the Nazis being in theory opposed to both.

One Nazi wrote that an all-Jewish society would be impossible, because "vampires cannot live on other vampires." I would say the economic success of Israel belies this. (There are the Palestinians, but they are not an exploited class, only marginalized and oppressed -- the Israeli economy does not depend on their labor, it depends on Jewish labor.)

But at some point, American white supremacists apparently made a decision to copy the Nazis, including their antisemitism. And the theory I mentioned in the OP -- that Jews were behind the black civil rights movement, strictly in their own racial interests -- is an American twist on that Old-World antisemitism.

*William Levitt, the developer of Levittown, the first major post-WWII suburban tract housing pod, was Jewish himself, but he would not sell to Jews -- if he let Jews into Levittown, the better class of white gentiles would not want to live there and the property values would be depressed. Selling to blacks was not even to be considered.
