At least five one-bombs in the last ten votes

For a change, here's a story about one-bombs from a story with over 100 votes. I'm not asking a question, and I'm not puzzled by it, it's just interesting. (Usually, questions about one-bombs are for new stories with just a few votes.)

For a fleeting fifteen minutes of fame, my last story was scoring quite well, well enough to possibly be a Monthly Contest contender at least for its category, if not too likely overall. This is the same story I mildly complained about three weeks ago, where it had four scores, but wasn't a Gettysburg address. The "My works" page had one score, from what I gather, that's the closest to the true score; The story itself shows a different score; The "Popular" list when you go to a category had another score, and finally, within the Top Lists page, at times the last 12 months and last 30 day scores were different.

The story remained below the radar before reaching 100 votes, because it at first was only in the last 30 days and last 12 month categories, where it gets less attention, and also is often nowhere near the top because other stories either temporarily or permanently pop up on top or near the top while having smaller numbers of votes.

Then just a day or two ago, I cracked 100 votes, and woohoo, I was number one, at 4.9, for almost an hour or so! Then 4.87. Then 4.83. Then 4.79 within 5 votes. Then, there was a sweep, which I presume was done in the background for the monthly contest, whose results are often posted toward the end of a month, for the prior month. So back to 4.9. Then 4.83 again. And 4.8 and now 4.79. By my calculations, I've gotten between 4 and 6 one bombs over the course of approximately 13 votes (the estimates are because I don't necessarily check often enough on a vote by vote basis... Sometimes I do/am checking often, sometims not.)

At approximately 100 votes, the math involved says a single one-bomb moves the score by 0.03, again, roughly, so just one person on their own can do this when the vote count is at 100, that doesn't take an army of co-conspirators. I can say though, whoever it is doesn't about one-bombing as long as the score is approximately 4.8 to 4.83 (or flying below the radar, such as when it hovered near 4.9 for about a week, but buried out of visibility because it didn't hit the toplist until reaching 100 votes.), since bombing stopped, and hadn't been occurring for the past several weeks, when the score wasn't changing on the top lists. Get too high though, someone out there sends the one-bombs fast!

(I do know the score will inch downward over time, post contest. It's not entirely one-bomb related either, it's that the sweeps perhaps do temporarily put a score higher than it's natural stasis point, by getting rid of obvious fake scores.) The score I predict will settle at about where it was during the contest, but before sweeps. That seems to be a predictor of the final settling point when things calm down.

But it's been interesting watching it first-hand, since I have my scores to watch. As I said up front, this isn't a question, not even really a complaint. Just a case where I got to watch first hand the things that happen near the top of a top list.

Yeah, interesting but sucky at the same time. Been there, tossed the t-shirt.

Good luck in the contest.

“I mildly complained”

It does come hard when a story is doing well and then gets hit hard with bombs. It’s happened to me and I think it happens to most/a lot of people. I had three 1-bombs within an hour on one story and I find it hard to believe it was coincidence. Gave the score a real thump and that was without any previous complaining by myself.

Sometimes trolls go after the writer, sometimes after the story just for the hell of it, and sometimes (perhaps in your case) because your story has had the audacity to knock their favourites off the top spot. I did originally complain, on this forum, about being bombed but quickly learned my lesson and keeping quiet has proved to be the correct decision.

I'm new to posting stories (been reading here for over a decade) but I learned a long time ago to never read the comments, and to never get too wound up about imaginary internet points.

I had a story pop into my head the other day that would be guaranteed trollbait and drama on LW. Debating posting it for lulz. Because I love me some lulz.

Might be my age but what is lulz? Just one of the many abbreviations I’ve never heard of?

My guess is friends of another author who wants to win the monthly contest. Basically a 1-bomb flashmob.

Not necessarily a bad suggestion on many internet fora, but for Lit, outside of LW the comments aren't a total morass. I've only had a couple that were beyond the pale and many have offered me greatly appreciated compliments. Others have offered some quite useful constructive criticism.

. I don't manage enough time to write stories I personally enjoy writing to bother with doing this. You're much more energetic than me :D.

Yeah, the upper quadrant of the first page of the toplists is a hotbed of scumbag voting. When you first pop in there with the minimum votes, it's typically a bloodbath.

You should start picking up new eyes from even those brief stints in that lofty perch, though. The bombs are more than likely going to vanish eventually. Those new readers ( so long as you continue to produce or have a large enough back catalog to keep them interested in the meantime ) hang around.

The next time a sweep hits, you'll stay up there just a little longer, and attract a few more eyes. Then they'll bomb you down again.

Slowly, but surely, your vote total pads out with legitimate votes, making it harder to bomb you down, making it more likely they'll be caught and swept. Eventually ( if the story is popular enough ) you'll have too many votes for anything other than a blatantly obvious and coordinated bombing run to knock you down, and that usually triggers the very next pass of the Hoover. That most likely has the added benefit of helping others the same trolls have bombed.

The troll voting goes on across the collection for several different reasons and it isn't all erased by the sweeps. It's just what can be done here, and so it is done.

I had exactly the same experience with a story posted nearly five years ago. My first story was a five parter in E&V. Part one did okay but not spectacular and I assume due to the self selection so frequently discussed here, the remaining parts did very well. It took over four years for part two to accumulate 100 votes, but when that happened a few months ago, it sat atop the E&V list.

The first additional vote, a 5, arrived about an hour later. Two 2 votes followed within a half hour and knocked the story down two positions. A swiftly following 5 and two 1s knocked it down to page three and out of notice, where it remains mostly unmolested (it received a 2 vote last week.)

My only regret is that I should have screen captured the top list during the story's brief reign at the top.

I've noticed that someone is randomly doing 2-bombs on stories. I track my votes every day and it makes no sense for a 2 vote to suddenly appear in part 2 of a 5 part story with no votes on any other part. It's happened twice now and both times it was in one part of a multi-part story. Some people just get their jollies doing it I guess.

First, congrats to the winners (not me) of the October Monthly Reader's Choice competition, although my story was mentioned as the top for its category (Exhibitionism and Voyeur.) Winners were UltimateSin, Bebop3, and bigtddybr.

Another sweep happened last night late, so my score went back to 4.9 all night long. Whoever had been the one-bomber before clearly sleeps well. We'll see how the morning plays out.

The next question will be, was the bombing for the top list spot, or was it monthly contest related? We shall see soon enough! If it was all time top list related, there's not a particularly long list of people out there with motivation to bomb it down, but if it was monthly contest related, the list gets longer, since it would include anyone with 50 plus votes with an October 2021 dated submission. We'll see! (Back in September, I had a different story that made it near the top of the Anal category. There were two rounds of rapid bombing there, and two sweeps too, but in that case, the bombing seemingly stopped after the monthly contest was over. (Both stories were theme contest entries too, by the way, one was Summer and one Halloween, but then they transitioned into having potential top-list and monthly contest spots too.)

To the various responses, all make good points. I did make screen shots just because. I do see far more activity for the stories when they make their appearances on top lists. I do take the scoring in stride too. It's all fun and games, but in the end, I'm still getting paid the same amount of money for my writing, namely zero. ;-)

. . . especially E&V, where this story was posted. The only stories on the Top List have many hundreds or even thousands of votes, which make them a little more troll-resistant. But they seem to be trolled too, so scores are low and all but one of my mediocre E&V stories once had a top-5 score. Now they are kept well below 4.8 on a daily basis. The attention is kind of flattering.

It would be fascinating to hear from a high-effort troll. Is there a war going on? Start an AMA, please, guys!

I haven't actually typed any of it up. It's just a bunch of scenes in my head. It wouldn't be more than one page if I did.

Problem is that sometimes things that stick in my head create something of a mental logjam and I can't do anything else until I write it out.

I have followers who one-bomb as soon as a new story by me appears. Some more arrive when a story reaches Hot...

I did it. I was frankly disappointed to receive a score much higher than I had hoped for. I was hoping for something below 2 and I got above 3. Some of the comments were even reasonable. What is going on people???

My best selling story on the ebook site where I publish was the only one that got 1 star ratings and negative comments. Success brings out the haters, that's for sure.

Interesting how outraged some are over the motivation for 1-votes, but have complete faith that they deserve the 5-votes.

Lulz, indeed.

Some of my stories are rated 3.xx - and rightly so.

Oh? Have you actually seen posters posting that?

I don't know about "deserve," but since I'm not texting out nudes I can't imagine what would motivate strangers to so ingratiate themselves.

Maybe I should threaten to send nudes. "Vote me fives or else look at me nekkid." Just crazy enough to work.

The title of the thread, all the way up top, was “At least five one-bombs in the last ten votes,” beginning after reaching 100 votes, and having votes 1 to 100 mathematically average over 4.8 (plus benefiting from contest sweeps.)

- Votes 1 to 100, 4.8.
- Votes 100 to 110, approximately 2.5.

There is a pattern there. Mathematically. That’s the point and focus of the thread.

Stroking

Some of my stories are rated 3.xx - and rightly so.

This is erotica. At the end of the day (or night) the primary purpose is to provide a good stroking experience. One could argue that a 3.xx story is the ideal. Not so bad that the writing disracts from the stroking and not so good that the writing distracts from the stroking.
