CHICAGO (CBS) — Nearly three years after he was accused of lying to Chicago police when he claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack, actor Jussie Smollett’s trial began on Monday.

Smollett arrived at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse around 9:30 a.m., with his family, lawyers, and security guards at his side.

A jury of six men and six women was empaneled by the late afternoon. Opening statements began afterward.

Special prosecutor Dan Webb began by laying out his case for the jury – saying Smollett’s story about a racist and homophobic attack was all a hoax. Webb said although the burden is on the special prosecutor’s office, he really only has to prove two things – that Smollett went to police and claimed that a hate crime had occurred, and that he acknowledged that there never was a crime.

As Chicago Police did earlier, Webb also Smollett’s alleged hoax stems from a threatening letter that was sent to the set where “Empire” is filmed that mentioned Smollett in a threatening manner. The claim is that Smollett was upset that executives on the show “Empire” did not take the letter seriously enough, and that really got the plan to stage the fake attack in motion.

So .. I don't think this is so much about Jussie as it as about the fact that social media is so easily manipulated that it can provoke riots based upon false or inconclusive information. If anyone has been following the Facebook Whistleblower story, part of what was leaked is that being "outrageous" gets attention, and apparently from we are wired to react more to negative information than to positive information. In other words, something that causes outrage will get our attention while something that generates a positive feeling won't grab our attention. Jussie got attention by generating outrage, and we as a society fell for it because it serves corporate interests to grab people's attention for advertisers.

What has happened with the Internet and the fragmentation of the traditional news and information outlets (Newspapers, Network TV) is that news shows and stories have become much more provocative. On some level, Jussie was just manipulating the news media like the rest of the "famous" people do -- from politicians to celebrities. Nobody tries to be fair and balanced anymore -- and so we are descending into a society run by competing propaganda machines, and there is no way to tell who is lying and who isn't, or if everyone is lying.

So -- can a society survive where you can't trust any of the institutions? I don't think I want to live in our society 40 years from now, because I don't see a way out of the chaos, but then again, I'm a pessimist anyway.

I agree with a lot of what you said here.

I think you can have some faith that things tend to work out because the masses make tiny adjustments in their habits. The best any of us can do is to spend our money with companies who believe the way we do, and to financially starve those who we disagree with. Over time, this will ahve a great impact and re-shape the debate.
