I'd vote against him on some charge. This crazy vigilantism must stop. He took a lethal weapon across state lines to a protest. There isn't a damn thing about that that's self-defense from the get go. And it wasn't a pea shooter he took. It was an illegally obtained assault weapon. And it was loaded and he used it. He killed people.

I'd pin the other one involved who had a gun, as well. And I haven't read what, if any charges, he's faced. I'd find charges for all rioters who could be tracked down.

If you go all the way back to the demonstrations in Charlottesville (where I live most of the year) in the summer of 2017, you'll find my posts to this discussion board hit both sides of that. Knocking all protestors who came in from out of town, regardless of the side they were on. You'll even find me saying the counterdemonstrators were initially at fault on the day because they blocked access to the park to those who had a permit to go there. Of course you'll also see that I said the permit should have been revoked because of the white nationalists' (which they admit to being) unsanctioned march across the UVa grounds the previous night.
