By which I mean a conventional non-nuclear conflict, against an enemy strong enough that the war drags on for years, and requires the whole society and economy to be drafted in service of the war effort.

The rules of engagement that allowed us to win that war in 4 years, no longer exist. Under existing rules (that could be unilaterally changed) we could not fight and win WWII.
Things would not go very well trying to win the hearts and minds of actual Nazis by kissing their ass and throwing money at them.
No, but that doesn't mean we won't still aim our procurement for that. Too much money in it for defense contractors and the generals who all get board positions at them when they retire.
At the present wage levels of the current force, we couldn't afford to put 12 million men under arms to fight a WWII today.![]()

The question is not whether we could win it, but whether such a war could happen at all.
We couldn't afford it either. We could afford to put the Chinese out of business though, and probably will if joe doesn't preempt the inevitable with another sniveling surrender.
Short of war, there is nothing we can do to "put the Chinese out of business."
Total bullshit. With a stroke of a pen, a real American President can deny them access to the American banking system and leave them bankrupt.
American business interests would not allow that. And what they do not allow, will not happen.
They wouldn't have any say in the matter.
American businesses are already leaving China in droves in anticipation of eventual national action. Get a clue.
At any rate the Chinese are only a secondary threat at present to America. The real enemy is Joe Biden, who is the only aggressor force actively at war with the American people, and the United States. He poses at present the singular hostile threat to the well being of the American people, their property, their freedom, their civil rights, and their pursuit of happiness.

RWs said much the same thing about Obama, and even about Clinton. It was never true then, so why should we believe you now?
Also, you are attributing a lot of agency, there, to a man you keep insisting is some kind of senile puppet.
The Puppet has masters. I thought people would be smart enough to figure that out. In fact I stated as much earlier. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he's powerless to stop them at this point. Whoever they are they are waging war against the American people under the Aegis of the President.

None of that was ever true in the Clinton or Obama years, so why should we believe it now?
You have no business using the words "sniveling surrender" when your guy bent over and grabbed his ankles in front of the entire world at Helsinki
What was true during the Obama years was a series of incompetent events that parallel those we see now. The only things that are the same are the players, many of those same people are fucking up things in this administration. like they did in the Obama years.
