Not by name, but it's clear he doesn't mean the Democrats.

In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, I was proud to lead an amazing, resilient, united people. When it comes to the unity of America, those days seem distant from our own. A malign force seems at work in our common life that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. That leaves us worried about our nation and our future together.

No surprise. The Bush family has despised Trump from the beginning, and Vice versa. Early in the 2016 campaign, Trump bashed W (and Hillary) for the Iraq war,. Then he destroyed Jeb’s campaign before it ever really got off the ground. When called Jeb “a low energy guy” it was devastating. Then he pissed W off again by announcing plans to pull out of Afghanistan.

See...others see it. This country can not survive unified. The only way some survive is we cut the cancer out. The longer it takes to admit this fact, the more painful the transition will be...for BOTH SIDES.

There is no way to break up the country without violence. Also, no geographical lines of division suggest themselves.

The Deplorable movement will eventually be crushed. It's taking longer than expected, mainly because of their constant use of relatively new electronic media outlets and their control of Fox Network. People are gradually learning how to ignore their crap.

But, all the bravado about actual acts of civil war is a whole different story than posting crap on the internet. As the actors (as opposed to chicken-shit posters) are arrested, sentenced, serve time, or die of COVID, the movement will run out of steam. The chicken-shit posters will have less and less to brag about, and their miserable lives will become much more apparent to the public at large.

Think small...be small. Break the country up into 6 geographical regions. if you don't like the politics of the majority in that region, let other regions buy your interest. It is simple...those worth something will be sought by other regions. Like minded people will congregate together. As it is, there is no incentive to move. Let's say....the PNW combines with California and offers a nationalized health care system. You like that idea...you will want to move there. You don't...I am sure the deep south will help you move to their country

Bless his heart. He seems to be putting on some rose colored glasses for the past.

There was never a past when the Dems were based on anger, fear and resentment. Unless, perhaps, you count Dems' opposition to pre-WWII isolationists -- and then it would only have been anger, fear and resentment of the Axis powers.

It's already broken into 50. The problem is the Central State's usurpation of the powers reserved to them

Trump's hostile takeover of the Republican party pushed Dubya and the rest of the Bush neocons out. Why do you think Liz Cheney has been so vocal? You think she's trying to "save" the party or take it back for the Bush neocons?

What's the difference?

No I mean that Bush is putting on rose colored lenses. We can thank the Bush administration for "real Americans" and branding the questioning of our government as a lack of patriotism. It was also an important time for cancel culture. Ask the Dixie Chicks.

He seems to have forgotten his own role.

50 years of failed establishment policies (Republican and Democrat) gave us Trump because people wanted something, anything different Trump left a lot to be desired, but at least a start.

But, we haven't had 50 years of failed establishment policies. Some failures here and there, such as Vietnam and the GWOT and the War on Drugs, but most were right in the main. Our society's most intractable real problem is the decline in well-paid blue-collar jobs through outsourcing and automation, and it's hard to imagine any policy that could have prevented that, or that could correct it now.
