Remington subpoenas report cards of kids killed in Sandy Hook massacre

Remington Arms, the maker of the AR-15 rifle that was used in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, has subpoenaed the report cards, attendance records, and disciplinary records of five children killed in the shooting, according to court documents.

This is a good strategy.

Firstly the defence is being conducted by Remington's insurers.

They will hold reserves in their accounts to pay for their costs and estimated liabilities.

Their profits and thus tax liabilities will for each year be moderated by the amount of the reserves until such time as the claims are resolved. Given the movement in markets over the past 10 years and the almost certainty of increases in the reserves, insurers are almost certainly in profit on these claims and have little incentive to settle. Similar arguments apply to re-insurers whose reserves and tax liabilities are probably off shore anyway.

This is delaying tactics grossly overplayed.

Depending on the school I think an easier answer would be that the shooter was very unpopular. A lot of these kids he targeted, not just targets of opportunity, were bullying him and the school knew. When your eighteen and want to go to the prom, lose your virginity, drive a car yadda yadda its not unusual for the other kids to talk trash. And when Nobody comes to your defense its easy to see them as just as bad.

That is not an excuse mind you. Not for drinking or drug use or assault and definitely not a school shooting but I can see a lawyer making the case that it had nothing to do with the weapon. The rest is just laying the tracks without the assault rifle he just would have shown up with a dufflebag full of hand guns.
