A spokesperson for the Taliban told Sky News Monday there would be "consequences" if the U.S. extended its troop withdrawal beyond Aug. 31 to complete the evacuation of Americans and Afghan allies from the country.

Why it matters: The U.S. and its allies are quickly approaching the full withdrawal date with thousands left to still evacuate. President Biden has said troops will remain in Afghanistan until every American is evacuated, and in remarks Sunday, he did not rule out the prospect of staying past the deadline.

What they're saying: "It's a red line," Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen said. "President Biden announced that on 31 August they would withdraw all their military forces. So, if they extend it that means they are extending occupation while there is no need for that."

"If the U.S. or U.K. were to seek additional time to continue evacuations — the answer is no. Or there would be consequences. It will create mistrust between us. If they are intent on continuing the occupation it will provoke a reaction," he added.

It's bluster. At this point, they have nothing to gain and much to lose by engaging U.S. troops.

"...create mistrust..."?

Didn't the taliban do just that itself by occupying cities so quickly? Didn't they promise trump they wouldn't do that so fast?

Yes, but the Biden was elected which changed completely their calculus.

You say that, but it us who have much to lose and who are paralyzed with fear in the White House. A single public execution of an American will put Joe Biden on his knees.

I cannot believe you are morally capable of wishing he handled this situation any better.

That's because there are better ways to handle it. Joe Biden is incompetent. The military showed him how it should be done and he told them to forget it, it was going to be his way, not their way. He shut down the Bagram Airfield, biggest blunder of all. He then pulled out our military and trusted the Taliban to secure the evacuation rights of our citizens. All the rest is the debacle he cause by doing those things in that order.

Not my dream. None of this is anything I ever hoped for. Joe Biden is weak and incompetent.

This may not be perfect but Biden is not weak or incompetent. This is an issue he kinda doesn't care about nore do most Americans. Are we dicks? Sure. But that's it.

Right now he is mentally incompetent and weak.

Show me where I asked for or advocated moving the military out before American citizens. Show me where I called for closing Bagram Airbase. You're the liar.
Biden ordered American citizens to leave months ago. They haven’t left yet. What could have been done about that?

They were just exercising their freedom of choice to stay and drag their ass about doing it until the last minute like everyone does.

you know, being "American."

Biden should invade Afghanistan and retrieve or destroy all military equipment left behind.
The vehicles and heavy equipment should all have hidden GPS transmitters in them, so a few drone strikes can take them out.

Exactly this^^^^

And now President Biden has managed to get 40,000 people out of Afganistan since late July, and 10,000 out in the past 24 hours.

The RWCJ keeps hoping that something extraordinarily terrible will happen that will trigger a mass casualty event so they can enjoy some kind of "win".

Meanwhile, the RWCJ ignores the traitor in chief's "Doha deal" wth the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government and led directly to the rapid collapse of the Afghan military. At the same time, the traitor in chief sabotaged the Special Immigrant Visa program that crippled the process of getting America's Afghan allies out of the country.

Deplorables is the perfect label for the RWCJ.

*nods*

I doubt that: One dead American would give Biden the excuse to unleash the whole of America's firepower on the Taliban leadership. In 48 hours he could wreck their personal ambitions permanently. Not good policy at all, but large sectors of the American public would love to see the theatre of a few Afghans slaughtered as the US heads for the exit. The domestic political downside for Biden would be modest and 2022 is a long time away.

Ironically the main problem for the Taliban over the next few weeks is to control their own people. The Taliban in the 90's, Karzai after 2001 and Ghani recently, had no effective rule outside of Kabul. 90% of Afghanistan is ruled ultimately by the local warlords, their families, tribes, ethnic groups. They will start fighting and killing each other soon enough, but for the moment the Taliban is probably praying that they leave the Americans alone.

It sounds increasingly that the Taliban is the only truly nationalizing, unifying force in the country.

Well yeaaaaaah........

The Taliban's "unifying" message is "women are property, servants, and breeding vessels". That's something the majority of Afghan "men" can get behind.

Pathetic.

Well, at least Biden didn't come up with a childish nickname for the head of the Taliban and tweet insults about his mother.

Not my dream. None of this is anything I ever hoped for. Joe Biden is weak and incompetent.

Naw, you're just pushing your agenda and trying to deflect from how much of this was set up by Donald Trump.

The military showed him how it should be done and he told them to forget it, it was going to be his way, not their way.

That could be referring to heaven only knows how many incidents on Trump's watch.
