Reading, writing, and math no longer required to obtain High School diploma.

Illiteracy at so many levels.

Oregon has just taken the lead in the race to the bottom. Yet another example of the old adage, "Monarchies rot from the top down, Democracies rot from the bottom up."

But at least they arent taught CRT #amiright

The hapless Governor doesn't want to be interviewed on the subject either.

In Oregon? Sheeeit, that's all those skulls full of much are getting pumped in. It certainly isn't linear equations, physics and grammar.

This is what we get for, what?, $15,000 per year per mush-skull?

In one fell swoop the legislature and governor have rendered a HS diploma nothing more than an "attendance certificate."

Oregon's Department of Education has until 2022 to come up with new graduation standards

So it does beg the question - what will the new graduation standards be if not proficiency in math, reading and writing?

Gym?
Music?
Recess?

You gotta admit, that definitely helps with the racial equity thing.

I have a prediction as to the unintended consequences.

The children of the high tech crowd and mid to upper middle class in the urban and suburban areas head off to private schools. The rural areas will band together for home schooling. Leaving what in the public schools?

"If you don't demand the best of your students, mediocre is the best you can expect."

the way things are shaping up i think all public school kids are going to look like cancer patients.

An average 12 yr old kid nowadays has more general knowledge than any boomer did when they were 20.

grooming minors for sex isn't the same as learning how to read, write and properly do math.

but thanks for caring.

Well the US has been failing in education for decades in Math, Science, Reading comprehension, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing.

The proof is in the posters here.....you only need to look at the board, individual posters, and which country educated those posters.......

If you look around the world at all the countries whose education systems are generally agreed to produce better results than America's, one thing they all have in common is centralized national control of the system.

there are like maybe 15 people who post on this forum with any regularity.

if you consider that the standard your own education failed you.

*chuckle* Now the deflection begins.

The groups responsible for this dumbing down of the educational system are specifically listed in the article. I'm surprised the lefties weren't all over that like flies on shit.

"They saying, by act of law, that those groups are too stupid to make it through high school!!!!!! That's blatantly racist!!!"

It surely is folks, but it doesn't change the fact that they can't make it through high school. (Perhaps this generally answers the question as to why US kids as a whole test poorly.)

By act of law these folks have come right out and said, "The Bell Curve" was right. Actually this is the second law on the books regarding the IQ thresholds, or in this case no threshold.

10 USC 520 is an interesting read as well. This is an exclusionary law.

Re. the anticipated up tick in private school enrollments. When a parent has to make a choice between his/her child's education pitted against 'diversity', diversity is going to get the royal middle finger.

I think a strong argument could be made that public education in the U.S. was much better before there was a Department of Education. Certainly there is no mandate in the Constitution for a federal intrusion into local education policies.
I can see some asshole in D.C. decide that CRT needs to be taught in Meeteetse, Wyoming. It's bad enough that more than half of Oregon's school districts have parents who probably strongly disagree with what their state board has decided. Your "solution" would make the problem worse, much worse.

Every word of this is true.
