Of course more will die. But here are the key points.

1) Delta is ungodly virulent. Those unvaccinated that have not had this virus...will. And they will quickly.

2) Those vaccinated may get sick from Delta...but they won't end up in the hospital nor will they die.

3) So who ends up dying? Those that made the choice not to get vaccinated.

4) This virus will mutate more. But if you can remove the hosts...either by vaccination or exposure...then it becomes a function of time and not pure mutation rate based on replication. This allows existing vaccines to be used in countries with willing parties reducing the overall likelihood of a mutation negating existing vaccines.

I know...I sound crazy when I say let it run its course cause a lot more short-term suffering will happen. But it ends this quicker reducing overall suffering. We know so much more about this virus than a year ago. Better to deal with the outcome of Delta than an unknown. The unknown will come...but maybe by then...people will listen?

agreed, approx 5-6 times more infectious according to stats we know. will likely turn out to be even more if testing were as much a thing as it was once pushed

see above, plus those unable to get the vaccine due to parental control/ineligibility . i really wish people weren't so gullible but for those who've heard the truth from trustworthy sources and STILL choose to believe in conspiracy theories? those i find it really hard to feel sorry for. if they didn't pose a threat to others, i'd be hard pushed to care at all :(

so how do we weigh the balance between removing host numbers by this method and the enhanced possibilities of mutation (for stronger or weaker, as an unknown). by allowing it to replicate en masse? I agree about buying time for other countries whose populations are willing to get their shots, and understand you have a better grasp of this at a medical level, so my questions are in good faith, not game playing.

again, i'm all about trying to understand how we find that balance and mitigating deaths of those who will die through no fault of their own.

people listen? i only wish it were easier, and a lot of it is down to this entitled culture in some rich countries. i guess when we accept that approximately one third of the population are just pretty awful people, reality's easier to come to terms with.
 
Some troubling news coming out in the last week regarding Delta. Sadly, instead of leading more people to get vaccinated (64% would be higher than unvaccinated), it will just provide more idiots with incorrect conclusions that "what's the point, if it's not effective? I'll take my chances with a bad flu"

“With more than 80% of Israeli adults fully vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, Israeli health officials are paying greater attention to how many develop serious illness. That number currently stands at 33, with the majority coming from the elderly immunocompromised population, according to health officials.

“Many of Israel’s new infections and those who developed severe illness are fully inoculated, but health officials say that is to be expected because most of the population is inoculated and the vaccines aren’t 100% effective.

“The number of cases in Israel is relatively low by global standards. Data from the U.K. suggest vaccines retain much of their potency against Delta, especially after two doses. The U.K. is experiencing a surge in infections caused by the variant, but the latest wave hasn’t stretched hospitals or pushed up deaths to the same extent as previous bursts of disease.

England’s public-health agency estimates that full vaccination using Pfizer or AstraZeneca PLC’s shots reduces the risk of symptomatic Covid-19 with Delta by 79%, compared with an 89% reduction with the Alpha variant. Protection against Delta after a single dose is weaker, the agency’s analysis shows, at 35%, compared with 49% for Alpha.

Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization with Covid-19 is much higher, according to U.K. data. Bottom line: Delta spreads faster, easier than Alpha and other variants. We’ve known this for a while now. The vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe illness against all variants. The vaccines are obviously less effective among people with weak immune systems ex. elderly). Evidence regarding the question of whether or not the vaccines are less effective against the Delta variant at preventing serious illness is inconclusive. Data from Israel suggests the Pfizer vaccine might be a slightly less effective, but more research and analysis is needed.

Los Angeles opened too early and they are now paying the price. Being elated over another major city opening up too soon is about as lame as it gets.

For context, here’s the price tag:

In January, LA County was averaging about 14,000 cases per day. Today they’re averaging about 1,635 per day. Most are under 50 and at extremely low risk of serious illness.

Of the 39.5 million people in LA county, only 507 are hospitalized with Covid.

These Covid patients currently account for a mere 3.5% of acute care bed capacity in LA County.

Frightening, right?

Why are you comparing cases to hospitalizations? 507 people would be an entire elementary school. Yeah, kinda frightening.

Your logic is just confusing as shit. Taking static numbers and relating them to other static numbers doesn't reveal anything because it's useless information. The increase of cases and infection spread and hospitalizations is what is glaringly alarming people. Tripling hospitalizations in local and regional areas when we've seen declines for months is the problem and, as the last year has shown, will lead to more deaths.

But please, show us the number of cats adopted by teenagers in the past month and compare that to January.....if you want to focus on stupid data.

He says that most are under 50 and low risk. Maybe to them but they are a walking disaster for those in the danger zone. The ignorance displayed here about Covid is so disheartening.

Cases only matter if people are getting seriously sick. Other than that, it’s useful as an indicator of acquired immunity. Hospitalizations and deaths that follow are what matter. The whole point of lockdowns was to prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed. 507 people are hospitalized out of nearly 40 million residents. Most LA County residents are going out to restaurants and bars and socializing without fear, and without masks except where they are required. You are frightened, and that’s fine.
