Now listen, I'm an American who has lived all over the world. We are not "imbeciles" compared to the rest of the world. The only topic in which we really fall short is foreign languages, and that is only because our language is also the only one all educated people have in common - the need just isn't as urgent for us as it is for the rest of the world. What you might be seeing is that many other countries' universities don't have core curriculums. Students from, say, India who are interested in hard sciences are free to take ONLY courses in the hard sciences, which gives them a leg up on American students when applying for PhD programs. Of course, that means they can't write a scholarly article (or much of anything else) to save their life, and they don't learn critical thinking skills to the extent that American students do. Far too many people don't care about that, which I find incredibly short-sighted. But all this has NOTHING to do with American schools teaching tolerance and being honest about our past as a country.
