American cops

So i stumbled upon this...

Not the greatest news source on the Internet, i know, but the footage is there.

Someone explain this to me?

Research the origins and history of policing in America, and it makes perfect sense.

Trevor Noah nailed it on the head when he observed that there aren't a few bad apples in policing, but rather that the apple tree is bad, and it happens to grow some good apples.

Additionally, much like some soldiers who commit atrocities after being desensitized by the horrors of war, some police officer commit atrocities after being desensitized by the horrors of American society. Sometimes the soldiers or police officers were desensitized long before they joined their respective services, and they put on a uniform just so they could abuse the authority and respect it bestowed upon them.

These things happen in every society, but it is especially shocking when it happens in a country that espouses the rule of law, equal justice, and accountability. And one that spends so much on "law enforcement".

Two things to remember:

1) This shit's always been like this

2) You can't reform it

Toss it all out and replace it with something better. I dunno who's gonna have the nads to do it, but this ain't sustainable as time marches on and society changes. And America in particular loves learning things the hard way.

I was trying to think of cop movies where the "hero" didn't break the law and manhandle a suspect, but they’re still the hero...

That case is making the rounds:

But so is this one:

The lack of accountability and oversight goes back decades. Some point it out as connected to the rise of police unions and things like the Police Officer's Bill of Rights which may have started out with good intentions, but has been widely abused. Officers get fired for misconduct, then ordered back to work by mediators and arbitrators.

There is a combat 'us versus them' -- 'I'm going home safe no matter what' mentality.

Even when the bad guys are really bad, you still get out of control asshole cops. Sometimes, they just can't help being assholish. Consider Cleveland:

At the end of a seriously badly managed chase, this asshole jumped up on the hood of the now stopped car and fired 49 rounds through the windshield, total rounds fired by officers is said to be 137.

Cops and supervisors were disciplined, some fired, this asshole was charged and acquitted.

This article explains some of it.

Read the first section and then the last. This is what happens when bad cops get rehired without facing consequences.

Also, search out and read about a turd named German Bosque.

That is absolutely a big part of the problem and it's going to get worse.

Between the press, the politicians, and the various dept's policies the decent cops are either quitting or retiring in droves leaving the departments understaffed. As a result the hiring standards are being lowered. Throw in the various state and federal laws about 'besmirching' an individuals reputation as far as post employment recommendations and you have the makings of a perfect storm.

Cops are hired to deal with the criminal element. That includes the violence that's inherent in crime. When you hire someone to do that job, you don't hire the guy who's a poetic florist down in the central core of his soul. You hire the thug, the bully, the guy who isn't afraid to scrap it up with someone. And then you train him to control his instincts until they're needed to be loosed. You give him the tools he needs to do whatever it takes. And then you protect him from liability for his actions taken at your behest.

You do the best you can to weed out the ones looking for victims they can prey on under the protection of their badge but those types will always manage to sneak in.

When the media only focuses on the bad ones in the name of ratings and sensationalism, the good ones get ignored or swept up and painted as the same scum. That hurts the good cops and they either quit, or they stop doing their job at the same level they've been doing it. Which means that most of the ones who are left are the bad cops who got past the checks in the hiring process.

Guess which ones the media continues to focus on?

Cops don't get participation trophies.
It's their job to protect people, not kill them.
A single rotten apple spoils the bunch.
They need to be better at training and policing their own.

What a bunch of bullshit.

Cops are trained to enforce the law. That includes killing people when it's necessary in order to protect the ones that need protecting. Or do you believe that Bryant should have been allowed to kill the girl in pink before the cop "talked her off the ledge" before arresting her with the least restrictive and forceful methods?

And if your single rotten apple analogy is to be taken to heart, then you've ruined the board.

You basically agreed with me, Rapey. Quit making weak AF attempts to troll.

What part of "what a bunch of bullshit" did you take as "agreeing with you"?

No one agrees with you because you're totally disagreeable. You're also disgusting but that's a whole 'nother thread.

You seem upset. :)

You are often stupid.

It must be some kind of genetic failure by your mom. You should talk to her about it and see where she went wrong.

I'll bring her to your hovel so she can "talk" to you. How does this afternoon sound?

In my experience.. cops are just bullys
Grew up with a step dad that was a cop ..

They think everything belongs to them and they think its perfectly acceptable to do whatever they want

Where I live we have three different kinds of police. We have city police whose jurisdiction is the city they work for. We have county sheriffs whose jurisdiction is the county they work for. Then we have the state highway patrol whose jurisdiction is the entire state.

My interaction with police is almost entirely traffic related. I have found that city police and county sheriffs are rude and confrontational. They will typically approach your car and say in a very emotional voice “do you know how fast you were going?” (Yeah, 5 over the limit). It’s an attitude that I have the power and you need to shut up. The state police will stop you and say in a calm even voice”do you know why I stopped you?” Then will ask for your license, registration and proof of insurance. When he’s done he’ll either give you a ticket or a warning. No excited voice. No attitude. No confrontation.

One police department is courteous and respectful and the other two are power hungry. Make no mistake, if you attack or refuse to obey that troopers commands he will handle whatever is necessary.

One does not have to be an asshole to be an effective police officer. It’s a culture that has grown out of control.
