CBO: If Democrats push socialized medicine, get ready for rationing

Amidst all the pre-holiday jockeying over an economic “stimulus” package, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a little-noticed report with big implications. More than 18 months after CBO issued a publication on single-payer health care with very little specificity, last month the budget analysts published a 200-plus page report giving more detail about the potential impact of a move to a government-run health system.

Joe Biden claims his administration will not implement a single-payer plan, even though his vice president and Health and Human Services secretary-designate both support the concept. Regardless, CBO’s work provides important context about Democratic health-care proposals, including the end goal for most on the left: a full government takeover of health care.

The CBO report did not provide an official cost estimate for a legislative proposal—either the House version of single-payer legislation (H.R. 1384 in last year’s 116th Congress), sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wa., or the Senate version (S. 1129 in the last Congress), sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. CBO said that in some cases, these two bills lacked sufficient detail to generate a full budgetary “score.”

Instead, the budget analysts examined several illustrative and hypothetical proposals to create a single-payer system. The five options attempted to control for three different variables:

Reality check: Health care is rationed now.

Uninsured

Percent of children under age 18 uninsured at the time of interview: 5.1%
Percent of adults aged 18-64 uninsured at the time of interview: 14.7%

Yes, because every country in the world that has already "socialised" medical care has gone to rationing.

The assertion is just dumb.

access to affordable health care in the U.S. is also a form of rationing. Many Americans skip doctor's appointments or go without prescriptions because of costs.Jul 11, 2019

That is the most dishonest reach of a left wing bias bit I've ever read and flies in the face of the common definition of the term.

rationing

A regulated allocation of resources among possible users.

Healthcare rationing in the United States

Healthcare rationing in the United States exists in various forms. Access to private health insurance is rationed on price and ability to pay. Those unable to afford a health insurance policy are unable to acquire a private plan except by employer-provided and other job-attached coverage, and insurance companies sometimes pre-screen applicants for pre-existing medical conditions. Applicants with such conditions may be declined cover or pay higher premiums and/or have extra conditions imposed such as a waiting period.[1][2][3]

Yea, leftist conflate unaffordable with rationed.

Got it.

You still have to ignore the definition of the word rationing to make that argument...thus it is still bullshit for the exact same reasons it was bullshit the last time you tried it. :)

You've been lied too, unaffordable =/= rationed, it's not the same thing, no matter how many lefties you cite pushing that lie.

How Healthcare Rationing Works

Limiting Which Healthcare Services Are Allowed or Covered

Health insurers ration care, but they don't call it rationing, and they don't even want you to realize that it is rationing. This is referred to as "covert rationing" or "implicit rationing."2

https://www.verywellhealth.com/what-is-healthcare-rationing-2615389

Ahh...INSURERS can ration, but that's not HC in the US. That's just maybe some insurers.

And your links case is absolutely fucking hysterical.

I love this preface they give you on the rationing section ...letting you know up front this is being written by a left wing activist.

When insurance companies ration care, it's a money-saving measure, in part for the greater good, but also to preserve profits or raise salaries or other reasons that their customers disdain.

And then they start with the same "Let just ignore the definition of the word ration" premise as the others.

Health insurers ration your care by limiting the doctors you may visit because they negotiate fees with those doctors. They will only pay for you to visit the ones they have negotiated the lowest fees with

Not being universal =/= rationed.

Health insurers ration care through co-pays, deductibles, and caps. In fact, what they are really doing is encouraging you to self-ration. Knowing that a certain amount of your care will have to be paid from your pocket, you may choose not to get the care or drug you need

Limited coverage isn't rationing either. LOL....

All these arguments are sad flailing because they're misusing the term "rationing" and or ignoring the meaning of the word.

You can make your criticisms of our HC system sure...but rationing isn't one of them. That happens on the authoritarian end of the spectrum.

Health Care Rationing Is Nothing New

In Health Care for Some, historian Beatrix Hoffman examines how health care rationing has actually been the norm in recent U.S. history, and how that might be starting to shift as more people accept the idea that health care is a right.

Harvard Medical School researchers released a study concluding that 45,000 Americans die every year because they lack health insurance and access to health care.

However, a classical economist would say that rationing also simply means the distribution of goods and services by price. Countries with universal health systems ration health care via controlled distribution, whether through national budgeting, government setting of prices and provider fees, restrictions on some services, or a combination of methods. The United States health care system rations primarily by price and insurance coverage

Lazaran also got very mad that words mean things and not just whatever he wanted them to mean in the moment that was convenient for his narrative. :D

Something's not right with that boy.

Call it what you will. Rationing, gating...

Doesn't make it better.

A single payer National Healthcare System is one the single best things that could happen for all Americans.

I don't think it.has a chance yet...but times are changing and people do see the huge benefits in cost.

Some day the USA will join the rest of the Civilized world.

Converting to a NHS while being 29 trillion in debt would collapse our economy. Why people can't understand that anything the fed government controls is never cost effective or efficient. A national healthcare system eliminates freedom of choice. Let the states handle health care.

No....LOL

"progressives" know they can't do that...they HAVE to do it federally. The need the federal authority to force it nationwide.

IF they do it at the state level? They KILL their states and they know it. Can you imagine the more "progressive" states with a tax rate high enough to pay for their "no ID needed, free HC for any and all!!" that they want to pay for?? LOL it would be game the fuck over.....people would realize they are enslaved by the state, can live like a fucking King in any of the more moderate states and fuckin' leave.

If they allow an opt out? The system flops...because only poor people who don't have any money will buy it.

Their system can't compete on an open/free market. :)

The ONLY way they get that and really any of the "progress" they want? Is a federal gun to all 330 million heads. They have to make sure that there is no escape....no choice....no liberty. That's why they need all their "progress" to be done at the federal level.

And they think they are liberals....
