Really sad state of affairs, although I'd point out that this likely has nothing to do with the new variant, that variant has been everywhere for a while, the only reason it was discovered first in the UK is because the UK is an order of magnitude further ahead than the rest of the world when it comes to genoming covid.

Sure, but that's why I said this likely has nothing to do with the new variant, we'd be
seeing similar spikes elsewhere since it is everywhere in the world and has been for
months and months. This is more likely a problem with everyone ignoring rules and

This is exactly what it's like here in Pa, NJ, NY and De.

The initial lockdown in March was most likely to strict on hindsight. We need a hard lockdown now or this is going to turn into something unimaginable....which I hope is never the case and it feels unimaginable already to me.

I have a few teachers as neighbors...they feel.like they have been throw into the lions den. I cannot fathom not getting them vaccinations right at the get go.

It's a no win. If the carers, doctors, police, etc. can't get childcare, things will get very unpleasant.

The shops here went crazy around Xmas! Jam packed. But, interestingly, jam packed with the over 50s. We walked into shops, turned around and walked straight out. Seems like all the younger generations had the sense to shop online for non-essentials.

No it's due to the total incompetence of the people running the show. We have only just made meaningful restrictions on people coming into the country. Only 11 months too late. We had a lockdown in December only three months later than the experts said was necessary. The new strain was discovered back in September and experts said at the time that it seemed more transmissive but the government ignored that until it had already spread throughout the country and only recognised it's existence when they lost control of the virus in London.

The government awarded a contract to run Test and Trace to a company with no experience of running such an operation and ignored the fact that every county authority had a team of people already trained to do the job. That is currently costing us £2million per day and has never managed to contact more than 50% of the contacts of infected people. The fact that the said companies were big donors to party funds had nothing to do with them getting such a contract.

We've had key government advisors breaking the lockdown rules and being defended by the Prime Minister who still expects everyone else to stick to the rules.

In short it is a catastrophe which was inflicted on us by a government who were convinced we could "allow this virus to rush through us until we acheived herd immunity."

i really don't understand why you want to believe it originated in a lab, ogg, when covids naturally occur in animal populations repeatedly, and some of those are zootic. this was the reasoning behind science having a good tracking process of those diseases worldwide.

Sure - it doesn't take into account under-reported deaths attributed to Covid in Brazil, but despite the total number of deaths in the USA ( itself appalling ) it doesn't change the death rate, which does lie at the feet of politicians, not technology or doctors. If the UK govt had followed the advice of scientists we wouldn't have so many deaths. So why does America, with a widely acknowledged lack of good leadership still have a lower rate than the UK? UK government failure.
