Computer peeps/geeks, any pointers?

I want something that will last me at least a couple of years, good battery life, and ideally very good display. My current computer is a desktop boat anchor that's ten years old, so this is new territory. We're in lockdown, so I can't just meander into Best Buy, going to have to order something online. Which is probably good because I hate talking salespeople. :D

I suppose I'll be the first to ask what are the intended uses?

I have a 2020 Asus Zephyrus that I'm very pleased with. Has a matte finish display that's downright beautiful to look at. But it's probably more power than most users need.

I’ll be paying attention..

I also need a new laptop. I need a new laptop for doomscrooling, checking the weather, and whatever else comes up during a pandemic..

Ideally, something with enough RAM to comfortably run Photoshop and other programs in the Adobe suite.

Get something with a better web cam please

Not sure of your budget but this is a great buy from Costco.

HP Pavilion 16.1" Gaming Laptop - 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10750H - GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q - 1080p

Features:
  • 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H 6-Core Processor 2.6GHz
  • 6GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q Graphics
  • Intel® Wi-Fi 6 (2x2/160) Gig+ and Bluetooth® 5.0
  • 16.1" WLED-backlit IPS Anti-Glare FHD (1920 x 1080) Display

Thanks. I'm assuming that's USD? I'm in Canada, and I have $1,200 of our much less valuable Canadian dollars to spend.

I ahve an ASUS Vivobook that is 2 1/2 years old that I have had no issues with.

I don't have tons of experience with Photoshop, so take this with a grain of salt. Depending on how intense the workload is, you may want something with 16GB ram, a dedicated graphics card, and ssd. Before I decided on my Asus, I was looking at Dell XPS 15, but that was a while back, now, and I don't want to say how well regarded these machines are without checking again.

The new Apple M1 Macbooks are crushing the competiton when it comes to battery life and processing power. The new 14 & 16-inch Macbook Pros will be coming out in a few months if you can hold out.

Start with the suggested RAM for photoshop (16GB) and build around that.

- are you looking for portability or a desktop replacement?

- Are you okay with a 60Hz screen or do you need something higher for use with photoshop?

- Do you need thunderbolt for massive file transfers?

- High coverage of the adobe RGB color space?

There is a new round of mobile video cards coming out that crushes everything. You can save money elsewhere and never notice...but these are must haves

Doesn't have to be super tiny/portable, although clearly more portable than my boat anchor computer. I'm thinking bigger, like 17 inch screen.

I am a graphic designer. Or, I was. I might be again, depending on how my life plays out in the next year, so I want something that will have decent graphics capabilities, should I need it.

Right now, I just want a fucking computer I can get on, because my kid commandeer the office and the desktop 24/7, or so it seems.

Oj fine. XPS 17 then. Ticks all the boxes for graphics work. Including world class screen. Adobe RGB, 4k, low delta e, the works.

I swear I'm not a Dell shill. They're just rock solid machines. Kinda pricey though.

If XPS 17, you could look at the more wallet-friendly option in the Inspiron 17. Not sure how you feel about a 2-in-1, though.

If Dell, be sure to check out the Dell outlet store. Great savings compared to brand-spanking new, and with the same warranty. In fact, they're having deals on 17" laptops right now. YMMV in Canada: https://www.dell.com/en-us/dfh/shop/refurbished-coupons/cp/outlet-deals-dfh

I'm a fan of Ryzen/Vega. I have no experience with Intel/Xe.

Wow, those are great deals, thank you! I'm not opposed to a 2 in 1, actually. And it's certainly a great deal. My very first computer was a Dell, way back, and recall it being reliable and "unglitchty" (That's my own new word, btw, y'all are welcome...)

I'm rarely lucky, lol.

Sounds like another Dell vote, though.
