Barr may have looked at John Dean as his best option to recover something. Dean went to prison briefly, but turned on Nixon before the end, and is now a paid commentator. Barr was headed for prison with what he was doing for Trump. He now has the ability to say that he wouldn't go as far as Trump demanded. That salvages something. (Not with me, but with some others.)

He's a more political version of Michael Cohen--someone Trump was an idiot to treat badly--so he might be more subtle in doing a Cohen (the New York state pursuit of Trump's tax schemes was provided by Cohen), but I'll bet he's just as effective in turning the knife in Trump. More power to him. More power to him getting screwed as well.

Well, saving his neck from jail time (or extended jail time) is a bit more important than keeping a political/celeb future. Being a cooperative witness is his best bet and would highlight yet another incompetence of Trump's--handling employees.

Barr is morally corrupt but not stupid. So he has bent the rules, skirted policy and trashed norms for Trump, but has not actually directly committed crimes for him. He probably saw that coming, being asked to destroy records or something, and got out so the next guy could get pinned for that and he can claim his hands are clean.
