He and She were best friends in college.

She was a wild child. A new boyfriend every weekend.

He was quiet and studious, the guy that crammed with her so she passed her exam. And spent hundreds of nights playing chess and bridge with her, talking until dawn, like only students do.

At graduation, he is preparing to go for his Masters in Divinity. She is leaving to become an international wildlife videographer.

Their final conversation when he drives her to the airport is the pledge that if they re both still single at forty, they will marry.

Eighteen years later, she shows up at his parish, without warning, and approaches him after Sunday service...

Vows

He is not entirely surprised by her visit, he hasn't forgotten the promise that he made.

However, he makes it clear that if they are to enter into marriage then he expects that they both respect the vows that they make to each other.

Two options from here:

She goes on a last bender, a wild weekend/month before the wedding

Or they write some crazy vows which gives her some sexual freedom

So you saw that Friends episode? ;)

She sincerely believes that she has gotten IT all out of her system. She is ready to settle down and live a god-fearing life with him. He will be good for her.

He sincerely believes that he has led too sheltered of a life. Letting a little of her craziness into his world will be good for him. And at forty years old, he's starting to hope that it isn't too late to make up for lost time. She will be good for him.

Unfortunately, they are both wrong.

I'd think it ought to be "fortunately, they are both wrong."

I have never ever seen any Friends episode.

They had an episode, I just have them on for noise in the morning, where Pheobe made a pact with all the guys that if they reached 40 and weren't married yet that they would get married. It was kinda funny to listen too as each guy found out that she had made the pact with the others.

That plot gimmick has been used it lots of places, but I'd never recalled seeing it on Lit.

I have two twisted plot twists to make it interesting:

Both depend on them being out of touch in recent years. So when she shows up:

A. She is shocked to find out that he is married. But wait... what happens? Does he leave his wife for her? Or does the wife welcome her into a triad?

and

B. Like A, but instead of being married, he is living "in sin"- an uncomfortable position for a pastor, to be sure. But his spouse's ex refuses to divorce without making it messy. What happens then - is he "single" and the soot to honour his agreement? Does the spouse welcome her in with open arms? Does she end up just having affair with the spouse? Is the spouse male?

That's the first thing I thought of. He's not married, but he is gay and is living with his lover. Since he isn't married, she can rightfully claim he needs to marry her. So he does, and the three of them have a bisexual threesome lifestyle and live HEA.

I don't think the male lover is bisexual. I think our protagonist is the only bi one in the triad, but that makes it work fine. Plenty of him to go around. His new wife becomes the darling of the old church ladies.
