Hundreds of songs over the years have fit that category. Many country and pop songs, even quite a few rock songs were written with that intent.

So, instead of the usual country 'somebody dun somebody wrong song' or woe is me tale, how about some oddballs? Ones that you don't expect to be tearjerkers?

First nominee ....

When The Tigers Broke Free - Pink Floyd

If you listen to it and read the back story, it'll hit ya.

Drowning by Chris Young and Dad’s Old Number by Cole Swindell get me every time!

Well I’m going to post a recent song as it has a really sad set of lyrics

Save your tears - the weekend

Really sad story

Weird tune. Good but weird. The lyrics don't really follow the music.....

Speaking for Everyone -- Athletics

When I am a bit maudlin and memory drags me back . . .

The Song With No name.
Shane MacGowan

Burn by Ray Lamontagne kills me.

It feels almost too personal. It’s clearly about him. But there’s enough that’s true for me that I feel it.

Rather odd one, BUT if you watched "The Magicians" (and enjoyed it)

"Take on Me" a cover version of Ah Ha's song, by the cast of The Magicians.
