The Biloxi School District got complaints about the wording in “To Kill A Mockingbird” — an American classic being taught in 8th grade English Language Arts classes — and pulled it from the curriculum.

Sun Herald received a email from a concerned reader who said the decision was made “mid-lesson plan, the students will not be allowed to finish the reading of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ .... due to the use of the ‘N’ word.”

The reader said, “I think it is one of the most disturbing examples of censorship I have ever heard, in that the themes in the story humanize all people regardless of their social status, education level, intellect, and of course, race. It would be difficult to find a time when it was more relevant than in days like these.”

This should not be banned.

Seeing this play opened up my eyes in so many ways. I was damn near mute for an hour afterwards processing everything. And for me, heh, that says something.

I don't agree with this.

US school boards have been doing this sort of thing for decades.

Unfortunately, some UK schools are trying to follow suit and some Muslim communities have protested about some book choices in schools' libraries but most of those protesting do not have children at the school and are just being unnecessarily triggered.

Exactly my point. CounselorDipshit posting about it being California in some rinky dink district because of 4 bitchy parents is as stupid as the thousands of example that come up in a Google search across the country going back for decades (and hundreds of years if you look at it historically.

There is no Right or Left on this. It is the absurd injection of so-called "morality" into a place it does not belong.

The descent into the lowest common denominator of culture and society in this manner is objectional to me and is not a Left/Right issue. It is a battle between ignorance and closed minds and enlightenment and open minds.

In schools with a large Muslim student body concerns have been expressed about books that mention a mon traditional (i.s gay) relationship of parents. But some of the pupils will have that sort of family.

The catholic church used to have a list of 'banned' books. Not now although they might disapprove of some e.g. Harry Potter.

Clueless, elite, pseudo intellectual, liberal, White privilege. You'll never have to deal with your children being called the ‘N’ word at school. It's just another academic exercise for you.

.
There are only so many books students can read in the years where TKAM is appropriate for age and content. I could care less if it was replaced with a different book that presented a fresh look at race in America.

TKAM had a good run, so why isn't it time to give other equally poignant books a chance???

I mean, the book being pulled from the curriculum doesn't mean a student couldn't read it on their own time.

It's really a non-issue.

Agreed. Some people act like these books are sacred texts.

That wasn't even articulate.

And in any event, Biloxi is not known for its liberalism.

look up the word articulate, you second-rate cocksucker. biloxi can suck Pelosi's fat one. we're talking about the cancel culture dip shit thugocrats live by. face it, you can't control your own, which is coming back to fuck you up the bum. and if you disagree with the majority of d-bags on your side, then you're down on your knees, wondering who you got to blow before you're allowed to call yourself a liberal again.

you know what? when i was a teenager if someone said i wasn't supposed to read something you can bet your ass i found a way to get ahold of a copy. let them ban it, that will just tell the kids what the good stuff is.

The UK court case on Lady Chatterley's Lover caused a surge of sales, particularly among teenagers, most of whom were disappointed.

At my school, Latin was popular because that meant we could read the juicy bits which were never translated...

I totally agree! Especially with your comment about the **DESCENT** into the lowest common denominator!

*chuckle*

You start or support a movement in a sense of woke awareness and the drive to remove life's impurities and then stand aghast and appalled at the collateral cultural damage when it hits too close to your own philosophical/political shibboleths. It makes some of us wonder just how woke and aware that the common social justice warrior actually is, or if they are just seeking to be part of the "in" crowd.

The beheading of a French teacher shows just how out of hand things can get.

He had shown teenage pupils the Charlie Hebdo cartoons about Mohammed as part of a discussion he had every year about how far free speech in a secular society should go. In previous years the conclusion had been that the cartoons were just a bit too far.

But this year some Muslim parents started an online petition to get the teacher sacked. That was picked up by a young man in another town who came to attack and behead the teacher.

The parents who started the petition are now facing charges.

They should. Education should never limit its curriculum to that which does not offend by conforming to the "community standards" of the minority. If we did that there would be almost no education, e.g., in the past, even math has been declared as Racist.
