I used to be really guarded. High alert, all the time. I'm less so know, but I find it difficult. Letting that guard down makes you more vulnerable and that means you're probably going to get your ass kicked sometimes. That's not super fun but I'm striving for it regardless. There's probably a fine line, especially here, but it's something I think is worth trying. Jury's still out, however, but it's about progress. Justa called it fluid, I like that. That's really what's it's about, figuring out what works.

Funny that we're headed in opposite directions! ☺️

>>> For everyone:. On a scale of 1-5, how guarded are you now, and where would you like to be?

I'll wait patiently at your one way gate. 😊

Not sure where I am and where I want to be. It depends on the person, which had been said, there's friends I want to be a 1 with... I'm getting there with them. Not about to walk around at a 1 though.

Haha! I'll leave the gate ajar for you, just come over whenever.

Hello friends!!

So the question today is about defenses. How would you classify your defense/self protection level? Are you automatically defensive in an argument? How guarded are you with new people and for how long? Is letting your defenses down something you strive for or are you happy behind a wall?

Psychologically, I am not a defensive person. My default position is open and honest. Part of that is I try not to do things that I would be defensive about. Openness and honesty defuse most of the potential conflicts and when they do occur they are honest and open conflicts.

In an argument (the actual discussion of differing points of view with the intention to persuade or explain) I am not defensive at all. I can make the argument for a particular point of view and just ignore those things that are not relevant to the actual argument. I generally don't engage in bickering and disagreeing for the sake of disagreement (or other more complex motivations). I find bickering over something to be mostly pointless ego masturbation.

I am not guarded with new people at all - again, openness and honesty are what bring new people into your life, which I generally find enjoyable.

As for the physical side of self-protection/defensiveness - I am strong advocate of the importance of self-defense and approaching the world in "condition yellow" (always be alert, always have a tactical plan that dovetails with your overall strategic plan). The best defense, physically, is be aware and do not get into situations where you have to use a defense. Then, when you have to take defensive action - win.

What one thing defines you the most? How do you feel about that?

Well, the one thing that I believe defines me the most is probably not how you intend the question to be interpreted but it is what I believe to be the most correct answer to the question, so my DNA is the one thing that defines me the most. What it didn't determine, it still plays a leading role in, as it is the blueprint for how the world sees me, how I age, my health, my future, etc. I am fine with it. There are no genetic health weaknesses, an average presentation, I am good with being female, no complaints. Now, what I think you are looking for is a much tougher question, and I am just not sure how to arrive at a singular more accurate answer. Is it my job? Is it my family? Those are common question people ask when meeting someone. Is it how people perceive me in those environments? Work, I am most likely to be described as quirky but wicked smart. If someone who doesn't know me is looking for me or wants to know more about me, most coworkers will say something like "you ever watch those shows on tv that have the female computer geek. picture them". Family, well I am just a wife and mother like a large portion of women. The most obvious commonality between the two environments I spend most of my time in is that I am female, so I am back to something determined by my DNA anyway. If I had to answer with just a personality trait, I would go with innovative thinker. I am good with that too.

I would like to say it is my offspring and the young adults they have become. I'm very proud of each of them for different reasons. They've worked hard and are each doing well in their own ways. I'd like to think that I inspired them to do the work and overcome their obstacles they've faced.

My strength, both physically and mentally. I have a presence, of something not to be trifled with. I don't mind it, but sometimes I have to convince ladies of my friendly demeanor. I only show my friendly side, to the people I enjoy or I'm comfortable with

Culture. Being American Indian, born and raised on a reservation (never left until I enlisted at 18), profoundly and subtly shaped me with long lasting impacts. I'm good with it, it was a wonderful childhood in a beautiful (and fucked up) culture.

I am sincerely happy for your pride in your offspring, and would say exactly the same thing for my own, with the exception that instead of inspiring them to succeed, I may have set a bad example that inspired them to rebel. You never know how parenting is going to work out. But what you always do is love.

For people who know me only very casually, I'd say motherhood.
For people who know me well, I kinda hope they see me as a survivor.
Physically, it's probably my big hiney and my curly hair.
And when I look in the mirror, I see a late bloomer, rough around the edges, but psyched about a future in which I have the courage and the confidence to shoot for the stars.

That's four. Soz.:cattail:

So I've been thinking about this for days. I really wasn't sure how to answer. And then today I got an email from a former Litster, who I'm still very close to. He used to say the thing he admired most about me was my resilience. Well, that and my breasts, but whatever. Lol. I've been through a lot and always manage to come out stronger on the other side. So I'm going with resilience.

I was just laying here un-psyched about a future that's gonna smell like old oil and diesel fuel. Thoughts of big hienies and curly hair and star-gazing are the only things that make me want to get up tomorrow. Do not underestimate your importance in this world. ;)

Has friendship become more or less important to you as you've gotten older? Do you seek them out in the same way? How did you make your last new friend?

It's definitely harder to make friends as you get older. But I'd say the friends I do have are closer than the ones I had when I was younger. It's definitely quality over quantity for me. I think my the most recent friend I've made is another parent from my kids' school. That seems to be how I meet most new people these days.

I've always taken friendship seriously, so there has been no change in the importance of those friendships. Yes, I still seek them out in the same way - to view everyone you meet as a potential friend.

I added two people to my circle of friends this year - both initially work acquaintances and both by discovering through casual conversation that we shared the same geek interests (art, science fiction/fantasy, photography), then exploring those interests together. My circle of friends is wide, my circle of acquaintances wider yet.

I don't think I can provide a solid answer to this, yet. At this point in my life, friendship has become less important. Ask me in 15 years and I will probably have a different answer. The truth is right now I just don't have the time to invest in friendships unless they are also in the same spot or low maintenance friends. When I was younger, my friend circle slowly lost members as they started families. They just couldn't put the time into their career, marriage, new babies, and friendships. Something had to give, and it was the time with friends, as it should be. Now that the kids are grown, they are reconnecting more and I think their answer may have changed from 15 years ago. I am not there yet, though. At this point, I make mom friends with those who have children in the same grade and school as my son. These are unlikely to stand the test of time as there isn't much commonality with most outside of the children. I think when the children aren't there, we will drift.

I do think I still make friends mostly the same way. People enter your life because of school, work, hobbies, etc. That is how I made friends. That is how I still make friends. My last new friend was a mom friend made because we kept running into each other at activities, and we have a similar sense of humor so conversation was easy.

Friendship is really important to me. But I'm terrible at making friends. Which is why I've had three incredibly close friends for 20 years+...and people here I've gotten close to and love dearly. And not much in between.

My last new friend was made here, which sounds fucked up probably, but is true. But I'm lucky for all that...

Friendships are less important partly out of necessity. Its just harder to met new people. I've also come to accept that no two people are going to connect on every interest or even most interests. I expect less out of friendships. I've come to realize they are usually interest specific and have limits. The last new friend I made that I am still in regular contact with is someone I met through others on social media and realized that we had common politics, music, and nerd tastes. That's rare, but I'll take it.
