What Are You Listening To Now? 6.0

New release Friday! Sixteen new releases all from rather obscure bands - or at least bands I've never heard of before.

Ovrfwrd from the USA with "Star Stuff." Due to be released today 10/2/20 but hadn't yet.

Polymorphie from France release Claire Venus." Odd album - main instruments are the saxophone and clarinet with drums and bass. Spoken recital of poetry in French with atonal jazz music. Okay, but I'm not a fan - too atonal.

Norway's Enslaved released "Utgard." Heavy, heavy metal with growls. Need I say more.

Kraan from Germany released "Sandglass." I liked this upbeat, straight prog album.

Pymlico from Norway released "On This Day" an instrumental progressive album which I haven't heard yet.

Italy's Methodica released "Clockwork." This is another I've have not heard yet.

France's Ghost Rhythms released "Imaginary Mountains." Good album - more on the jazz side than prog but well done.

Robert Svilpa from the USA released "To Sleep, Perchance to Dream." That title alone got me to listen and it was worth it. Very good rock prog music with very nice production by good musicians.

France was busy this week also with Scherzoo with their album "05." This confuses me as it is just two short songs offered individually. Haven't heard it yet.

Altare Thotemico released "Selfie Ergo Sum." I need to listen to this prog album again as parts worked and parts didn't work for me.

Juan Ricardo Weiler from Chile released "Eye of Horus." I really liked this album which had a lot of Mediterranean flair to it. Great production with nice compositions.

THEO from the USA released "Figureheads" another album I haven't gotten to yet,

Profuna Ocean released an EP called "Continuation." I haven't listened to this Netherland album.

Benjamin Kite released the free on bandcamp prog album "Ingenious Cacophonies" This Canadian band released a fun straight ahead prog album.

USA's The Reticent released an album about the seven stages of Alzheimer's entitled "The Oubliette." This reminded me a lot of early Opeth. Lots of dark passages with not growls but throat screaming among the regular vocals. Good album not for the faint hearted.

Finally another Canadian release from Illuminated Minerva with the release Enigma Adamantine a nice fairly heavy instrumental prog album.

While not prog it is worth mentioning that Sweden's metal band Amaranthe released "Manifest" today.

Happy music listening one and all! Be safe and well

Peace, love and happiness.

Fire trucks and ambulances as they roar down the road... well gone now.

I live fairly close to a main thoroughfare.

I just went through the latest issue of my favorite metal music magazine, Deaf Forever (after the Motörhead song) and added the following to my list of stuff to buy:

Blue Öyster Cult - The Symbol Remains: It only took them 19 years to get a new album done. Heard three songs so far and immediately ordered the record. The last Kansas was a surprise, this one will be fucking awesome.

Benediction - Scripture: Old-School Uk Death Metal. Just what the doctor ordered. :)

Wytch Hazel - III: Pentecost: I have no idea why these guys went past me thus far, because their hard rock/early metal thing ticks a lot of boxes for me. Had the pleasure of hearing two of their new songs and I'm hooked. Might want to go back and get the other two albums.

Enslaved - Utgard: Yup, about time.

Them - Return to Hemmersmoor: I've always written them off as a King Diamond clone, but the review said only the vocals hint at their influences. Don't get me wrong - I love the King and don't mind if others worship his style, so Them have my attention either way.

Edit: Huh, completely forgot Necrophobic's Dawn of the Damned album. The perfect blend of blunt force trauma and razorblade melodies. Fuck yeah!

For my fellow music and prog nerds - there will be both a new (and maybe last) Fates Warning album (Long Day Good Night) and yet another Neal Morse mass. Thought you might want to know. :)

RIP Eddie van Halen

Died 6th October, aged 65.

Never much into him, personally, but a hugely influential guitarist.

Good list. I've added some of those to my research or my get lists.

The fuck? Seriously? Haven't heard about it just yet. I like their early work a lot. Damn, 2020 continues to be a shitshow of epic proportions.

@Haulover: Anytime!

*rummages in his album collection*

Van Halen - self-titled (1978)

RIP, you beautiful lunatic.

Van Halen, all day.

Been near tears since I found out about Eddie. I'm of that age where every song represents a period or instance in my life. Memories have been flooding back today as the local radio station devoted their channel to nothing but Van Halen all afternoon. Even writing this I am choking up.
We've lost a lot of great talent over the last few years but this one hurts me the most. Like radio hosts, we invite them into our homes by listening and buying their music, somehow anonymously making them part of the family. They never really know but they have a huge impact of our lives.

2020 is really fucking things up.

Gonna miss you and your magic fingers, EVH. Rest in peace.

In the Still of the Night -- The Five Satins

Still wandering through the doo-wop world, those guys voices and harmonies are amazing!

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - The Tokens (several times, I love the male falsetto!)
Shimmy, Shimmy Ko-Ko-Bop - The Imperials
Mr. Blue - The Fleetwoods (OK, not doo-wop, but come on!)
Oh What A Night - The Dells
Angel Eyes - Curtis Lee (There's that falsetto again, that is so cool!)
There's A Moon Out Tonight - The Capris (Falsetto again!)
Maybe - The Chantals (super torchy and just mmmm! This song was in 'American Hot Wax' sung by Brenda Russel as part of 'The Dee-Lites' where I first heard it)
Little Girl of Mine - The Cleftones
Come Go With Me - The Del-Vikings (Also featured in 'American Hot Wax' sung by 'The Planotones')
Molly Mae - The Crests
Earth Angel - The Penguins
The Marvelettes - Mr. Postman
Frankie ***** & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall in Love
The Bobettes - Mr Lee (Also featured in 'American Hot Wax,' sung by 'The Dee-Lites, which is why hubby hunted it down)

50's music is amazing, these guys actually had to sing, no autotune or overdubbing, wtf have I been listening to all this time, definitely hooked!

Try Whuspering Bells by The Del Vikings!

And now for something completely different:

One Note Samba--Dean Martin & Caterina Valente

Delicious; Will has the Astrud Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim versions, but I prefer Astrud Gilbero's smoky, laid-back, sexy voice. Will has the Astrud Gilberto vinyl album with this track, The Girl From Ipanema, and The Shadow of your smile. Lovely stuff, what the cool kids and Manhattan sophisticates were listening to while Beatlemania happened somewhere else...

I'm FINALLY spinning that new Ayreon. I have a ton of new albums that I haven't heard, and need to get to as soon as this crippling work schedule eases up.

@Blind Justice - I see what you mean about this rekkid. It's good, but it almost seems ... forced??

I'm barely halfway through it, though, and that's the first listen. So I owe it more time. But I doubt it will be my favorite Ayreon. That honor hoes to the twin CDs Universal Migrator --- Part 1 - The Dream Sequencer / Universal Migrator --- Part 2 - Flight Of The Migrator.

My work working hours per week since September the first: 74, 79.5, 93, 83.5, 75.

I can't complain too much - I'm billing my client by the hour :) But when the hell do I get to listen to music, or write!

One very obvious thing regarding the new Ayreon: It's short. 74 minutes and change. There was no need for the 2CD treatment. Also, from a business standpoint, there were some headscratching moments too. For example - no lyrics in the base 2CD package. Why? Also, this is the first Ayreon album in 20-odd years which needs secondary literature to explain vital plot points. Without the comic book, important information like relationships between characters or how the main guy actually died won't get explained, which makes the narrator all the more baffling.

I agree - this album feels, if not forced, at least somewhat rushed. I'm not sure how much is the pandemic's fault. "The Source" felt more coherent and tighter.
