As some of you might have spotted, I'm interested in planets. Our own, near the Sun; distant ones around other stars; and the imaginary ones we use as settings for our fiction.

Individual planets have their own characteristics and there's plenty of variety available on most of them, but if you were to design your own perfect world how would it differ from Earth?

For me, it would have more equitable seasons - so less axial tilt and a more circular orbit - and a slightly longer day for more sleep. Maybe shorter years, so to keep the temperature similar we have to cool and redden the sun a little and move the planet closer.

Slightly lower gravity would be nice too, so we shrink things a little - not too much or we start to lose atmosphere. That also has the byproduct of making mountains that can reach higher. We still have a moon, but now our gravity is lower it has to come a bit closer to keep the tides similar. It looks even bigger in the sky and months aren't as long. Not only in absolute terms, but also because of our lengthened day.

There are other subtle side-effects, but they'll just make our musings too complex. Now you've seen how my ideal world is slightly different from Earth, why don't you suggest how your perfect planet would look?

It would have smaller continents but a greater number of them. More shoreline. ;)

Probably a mix of both. I still like the idea of traveling to far away places and exotic locales. But having a speedboat that could take you to multiple islands quickly also has appeal.

First kudos , it's a interesting thread theme and definitely a authors thread title to ponder and write something interesting to share.

Being a mere mortal  with weak actual writing skills. I will type out a reply as if it is a writing assignment I chose. Simple and to the point.

The seasons would be aligned and the same globally. Oddly enough I think I would enjoy the uniformity of it. The inhabited population would work together as a whole to provide substance and a future for each other.

Looking up there would be three moons that change with the seasons and health of our Planet. If a part of the planet is in need of population , food sourcing , Eco re-balance ect. It would be addressed in a timely manner.

Finely in closing , it would have imperfections visually , from the changing of the seasons. A example would be the transition from fall to winter and that visual. Or spring to the dog days of summer in the southern United States. Deserts wouldn't exist nor would arctic regions.

Looking forward to reading more from this thread

Cheers

Thanks for joining in, Fingerfuxs.

That sounds a very interesting planet.

Like mine, it isn't tilted, but to remove deserts and tundra yours has the amazing property of being cylindrical.

* smile , maybe I should consider a *edit and add that it's also *the birthplace of the Starfleet command.

When I was young (A very long time ago) I fell in love with Allen Dean Foster, and his Humanx Commonwealth Universe. I found his imagination incredible, and he set me on a science fiction path that's never faded.

I'm writing a fiction trilogy about the universe, and my user name (Deacon Voss) is the main character in the series. His father was a preacher/miner and his son picked up the nickname "The Deacon" and it stuck.

Anyway, cool thread :)

Would you like to share a few peculiarities of the planets in your SF universe?

It's hard for me to imagine WHAT a new world will look like or HOW it would be imagined because I really don't think it would be kept very well if we did inherit a new model based on how this one is being treated. The one we have, people are dying left and right. I understand how the population at hand has to decrease in order for the world to be maintained. The kill or be killed behavior is becoming more pronounced.

With this pandemic, more babies will be/are born and with the full moon, more births are bound to happen immediately regardless. At the same time the unhealthy, those born with health issues and the elderly will be at risk, respectfully. All I can say is, the answer may be in HOW we care for what we have is how the future will look, whether it be on this planet or another elected or selected one (s). Science is the key. Some are looking to the stars. Few are looking at/for a modern day Atlantis. Nothing lasts forever. This earth will take care of itself, we are here just for the ride along the way.

The though of the movie Alien and Aliens came to mind honestly. Will profit be more beneficial than human decency?

No temperature extremes; always between 45 and 85. No ice or snow, ever. No drought. Enough rain (only at night) to keep things growing, but never flooding. No severe weather/storms, ever. Sufficient Sunlight, but not blinding or damaging.

People could theoretically walk almost anywhere, so no vast expanses of deep water or high peaks. Only rolling hills and gaps that could be bridged.

You're right, Caramel. How can we talk to (or visit) life on a different planet when there are too many people right here who can't even talk to somebody who lives at the other end of the same town.

Maybe the food productivity that came with the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago is now keeping far too many of us on not enough land, but without the byproducts of farming and land management we wouldn't have the rolling vineyards of Tuscany or the patchwork of fields in the Yorkshire Dales.

Perhaps the problem is politicians who don't listen to the public who elected them, or multi-national media organisations pushing their own hidden agendas?

You're right about Earth itself, there's nothing we can (currently) do to obliterate this big ball of rock and metal. The life upon it? That's something quite different.

Hmmm, tricky one jaF0.

No winds or storms is hard, if the planet rotates coriolis creates them and if it doesn't then the uneven dayside/nightside heating makes them blow across the terminator (sunrise/sunset line).

Always 45°F/7°C/280K to 85°F/30°C/303K..... No poles or equator, cylindrical like Fingerfuxs' place, barely any tilt, generally warmer than Earth's average of 287K/14°C/57°F but no intense sunlight? Well, we have to push the star down to a red or amber dwarf and move the planet a lot closer. Maybe a year that's four of our months?

No tectonics and old enough for erosion to have washed most of the mountain peaks into the seas. That would make the water saltier, easier to swim in but foul if you swallow any.

I bet there are some weird stories waiting for you on that world. :)

Lovely thread.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but I've created my perfect world/planet over and over here, allowing in a few mortals to keep my mortal self company. :) And then inviting a few other influencers just for fun.

My planet is heavy on creation and intimacy and light on people and clothing

And my planet definitely would have this, among a few other songs, playing regularly from the heavens.

Thanks for coming in, Lara.

These are your perfect worlds, not mine. All I'd like to do is give you ideas based on some consequences you might not have considered. Hell, your perfect world might be DiceWorld - a cube with casinos as far as the eye can see.... :D

Light on clothing and intimate is always a winner.

Hmm.... let's see.

I'd like my planet to be emerald green. Lush and healthy.

I don't think I'd want the landscape to change too drastically. Science, geology, etc.. aren't they part of the reason why the earth is beautiful, or at least was at one time? Snowcapped mountains, the earthy color of the desert.. I'd hate to never see those again. So.. more trees, more plants and flowers. Clean fresh air ....bodies of water. White sand beaches that look untouched. A magic carpet for everyone to travel as they wish. But, more importantly, people who care enough about the environment, and each other, who are mindful and work together in preserving my/our/their surroundings.

Seasons. All four please with a few modifications. Longer spring, with just the right amount of rain. Longer summer. No extreme heat or storms. Fall..as is. Winter, give us some snowflakes, some snow for children to build snowmen and for skiing enthusiasts.. but let it be short.

Oh! And while I'd like days to be longer, I'd also like to have a warmer, summer month of longer nights. Of the starry skied kind.

Hi, Trixxii.

The Earth doesn't orbit in a perfect circle, so (northern) winter is already shorter than summer. I'm sure we could increase the orbital eccentricity just a little to accentuate that. Best we reduce the tilt slightly, say to 18° or 20°, so you don't suffer from the heat.

Inside of this * world , at this second and for , say the next 10 hours.

The perfect world would be condescended into this little cube , have creative thought put forth by applying finger to keyboard , from said thought effort , by a random viewer , that saw the thread title , and shared , said thoughts :D

The perfect world .......ta dah !

This thread makes me think of the short -- All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury. What it would be like to live on a different planet, in Bradburys imaginings, a rainy everyday life, where the sun is only visible for a couple hours every seven years. :rose:

That's not a different planet, it's Manchester. :D

There would or could be , pictures , or hyperlinks / portals to other threads , maybe a clever byte of wit that's brings a smile to a *lurkers face and inspires them to quote and type out a few words.

Would you ever consider buying up a large piece of land in a town with others and building it from scratch? You all would be the architect and designers for what this town will look like, be and grow into.

I don’t think I would. A project that large just involves too many people for my taste. Granted I’ve also only lived inside actual city limits for two years out of my thirty on earth so I’m also just more comfortable living on my own out in the sticks.

I only asked because there are people who did just that. A town full of 19 families who bought up a town in an area where it would be called theirs. All it is, is land for now. They are living on the land in tents and camping on those grounds in response to the racial climate in the US.

For sure planned communities are nothing new. I always find them interesting and when I was younger I would have been much more optimistic about the outlook for joining/making one. Too old and jaded now.

Very interesting question. When I was a k to 12 administrator I was invited to a grade six class for their presentations on their own planet. Much like your question, after studying the solar system, for their final project they had to do a presentation on their perfect planet. The presentations were in groups. One group was all beaches. One only had winter so they could ski and play hockey all year, it had lots of mountains( remember theses are 12 year olds). The one I liked best thought the earth was a pretty good planet and that we are screwing it up. They would make a few changes, like keep the forests intact, larger producing farms and no natural disasters. I liked the last group and my planet would be simila. I like Earth. I could use less winter with more even seasons. I live in the most northerly provincial capital in Canada and it is starting to feel like fall is over. Like I said 3 month seasons would be great. Gotta have all 4, actually Like winter. A little more daylight in winter would be nice. I realize I could have those things if I moved south. I think one of the coolest things about our planet is the great range of landscapes and environments. I like our planet a few minor tweaks and this is the perfect planet we have to stop messing it up.
Not exactly what you wanted but it was fun, good question
