I've only been writing erotica a couple of months, but I keep running into and gettng hyperfocused on the same trope. I didn't know it was a fantasy of mine before but I seem to love the idea of characters tricking each other. Particularly with word games or similar. I've spent an inordinate amount of time writing out cleverly worded contracts (that surely even my lizard brain knows wouldnt stand up in a court of law) or thinking of very exact ways Dom/mes can make promises which are, somehow, worse than nothing. I've had to ban myself from it as I get completely carried away with something that, at best, will be incidental to most readers.

V quick example: a recent story I worked on had hubby make 'rules' for his wife about what she could/couldn't do on her first, second & third dates with male companions Then for ~complex plot reasons requiring excessive exposition~ he thought she was one date behind where she was - so date 1 in his mind was really date 2, and he was always giving her more permission than he realised. I have no idea why that turns me on so much.

Dodgy consent practices notwithstanding, does anyone share this interest? Or maybe know what it's called? xx

I've been thinking about this today, and realised that it goes a bit beyond tricks. I seem to have a thing for designing... systems, i guess? Then thinking of sexy implications for them. Some of these implications are, indeed, very sexy but it's such a long walk to get from set up to pay off I have no idea how to go about it.

This proclivity pairs quite well with a love of sci fi. This evening I was going to write a story about a high tech chastity belt, but instead spent all my time researching magnetism, atomic structure etc. so I could make a bit of realistic unobtainium. The more realistic I made it (e.g. the more it mirrored real scientific processes) the more turned on I got. Normally getting very turned on by something aids the creative process... but the imaginary object of my excitement is usually about 3000 words of exposition away by the time I sit down to write.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this ('stop being weird' would be a perfectly fine response)

I don't know why, but I couldn't help but think of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - a classic, if not somewhat pedantic and tedious exploration of word play, not to mention a (British) comedy cum existential exploration of tragedy...

I really like that play. Not so much I'd jerk off over it. Well one time, never again. They won't let me back in the National.

Some brains just get off on complexity (I know as I have one of those too!) I also am fascinated with systems in general so it makes sense that that could transfer over into sexual fantasies and desires. My advice is lean into it - you enjoy what you enjoy, what’s the harm in spending time on that? If this is taking more time than you have to spend you may need to set yourself some limits or implement a routine to manage this well but I personally have gotten a hell of a lot out of my odd proclivities and wouldn’t dream of being unkind to myself or preventing myself from enjoying them. I hope you wouldn’t either!

Some predicament bondage touches on this kind of thing. And there's elements of humiliation and sadism and a whole bunch of other things in there... but I don't know if a liking specifically for complex systems has a name all its own. Maybe you should invent one?

And, for what it's worth, I'm into this too. I love things that are convoluted, strange, tricksy, etc. The more complex the better.
