So I got some bad news healthwise yesterday. Looks like my blood sugars are completely out of whack. I have been eating low carb and working on losing some weight but now it seems that this is going to be more about getting shit straight with hopeful weight loss as a bonus.

Given that we are a community and support is always welcome, I thought I would throw out the idea of starting a thread for anyone interested to check in, offer tips, and just generally support each other.

So is anyone interested in a healthy eating or just generally getting heathier (maybe including recipes and exercises) thread? And if so, I know they've been done in the past but those threads are years and years old. Should we just resurrect one of those or start a new one?

There's one out there that everyone really seems to like and it's got a ton of supportive folks in it.

Oh this is exactly what I was looking for!! I don't know how I missed it. I did a search and nothing showed up except decades old threads. I will join immediately! Thank you!!

You took the words out of my mouth

*says in a zombie voice* “Joooinnn uuussss”

I’m sorry you got bad news about your blood sugar. I had a taste of that when I was pregnant—gestational diabetes. It was really hard to manage. I was on a strict diet and walked a lot and it helped manage it.

What sort of things work for you, Blu?

I have a few medical issues (most notably PCOS) which necessitates eating low carb in order to lose weight. And I have had success in the past. Things have gone be to hell in a handbasket these past few years though and in taking care of everyone else, I neglected myself. Finally get I for a wellness exam and blood work and whammo....my blood sugars are so far out of whack that they are creating cascading effects in other areas. I have a follow up appt. in 3 months and I really want to see a difference.

I'm back on metformin (just started last night and uggghhhhh) to get blood sugars under control. I've been clean (low carb) eating for a few weeks now. And I'm gonna start adding back in exercise. Think I'll start with walking and work up to running. Also bought a swimsuit today so when the pool warms up I can get back to swimming laps.

I hope the pools open. I miss swimming.

Well I know that there are a bunch of folks in the Sweaty thread who are doing the same sort of thing—and checking in with each other about their goals. All are welcomed. Oh and sometimes we just talk about random stuff too.

It sounds to me like you’ve already off to a great start.

Years ago we lucked into an above ground pool, so luckily I just have to wait for the weather to warm up. Right now in light of other health issues I don't want to tempt hyperthermia or a heart attack. Lol

Maybe gradually stop taking anything that has sugar added, which is probably 98% of what you'd buy in a grocery store. Switch to Tupelo honey. Tupelo has a higher fructose content then glucose & absorbs slower into the blood system. Which makes it a great honey for diabetics.

Since you don't like honey, Agave syrup. This is plant based, coming from the same plant Tequila is made from....just without the worm. This is also high in fructose.

I finally found a monkfruit sweetener that works without spiking a sugar response. So yay. And I think I've broken the craving after a few weeks of no sugar. Just trying to keep it going. Especially now that it's more of a health issue than vanity.

Get together with a diabetic nutritionist right away. Ignore the health food experts they'll kill you. Don't fuck around with this eighter. You seriously don't want to end up where I am, all because you neglected it now. Tske it from me, it isn't pretty if it's left unchecked.

I use 120 units of insulin a day, and it isn't fun, so please, don't let it go, you have people that need you around a while.

I am definitely getting on top of it. I know what I need to do. I had lengthy talks and appts. with nutritionists back when I was pregnant and developed gestational diabetes and then again when diagnosed PCOS. The problem is that I have neglected myself. Massive shit has been thrown in my path these past few years and I've been concentrating on everyone else.

The recent bloodwork results and seeing the far-reaching effects into other organs has definitely been a wake up call. Started the metformin past night and already am seeing some downward movements. My sugars are down to 188 as of an hour ago. Which while still bad, it's lower than previous readings that hit in the 300s.

Believe me I am taking this very seriously. I lost my sister while she was young. The age I am now in fact. And it hit me that this world, this life isn't promised to us. I need to put myself first for a change.

Yes, please put yourself first. It isn't selfish like it might feel, because you can't help anyone if you're broken. I hate to sound bossy, but if you saw my legs alone, you'd freak out, lol. When it gets to your heart, it can really mess with you.

Is your A1C pretty high? I had one that was 15.7 when I almost died in 2013, so shoot for that 7.0 or under. I use it as my motivator.

My fasting glucose was 254 and my A1c is 9.1. The Dr. is acting like I can turn this around. But my hemoglobin and hematocrit are higher than they should be and she's noticing issues with my liver enzymes. She says the elevated numbers are due to my liver going screwy. So she wants to see me again in 3 months. If I can't get my sugar numbers down with the meds and eating/exercising properly, we'll look into more options.

I don't know whether to resurrect an old thread or start a new one, but I'm interested. I know I really need to work on my nutrition and diet too. Maybe we can support each other?

It looks like beachbaby has found a current thread and it looks fantastic. :D

I'm not a doctor obviously, but I do know that high sugars can really mess with things. Stay positive (You sound good) and remember, you can do this.

When you see that blood sugar number, use it as a motivator to exercise. They always mention your weight (Get used to that nightmare convo) But ignore that crap right now. The glucose in your blood is fuel for your muscles. You have to much so burn it off. Simple things like legs lifts while watching TV, or even a couple small dumbells with the arms moving. Anything to add Extra motion burns sugars.

Anyway, good luck, I hope things get better quickly. Never hesitate to reach out if you get in a funk. Been there, done that, it can be lonely.

I had to look this up as I've never heard of it. Looks good tho, low glycemic, full of anti oxidants & is an anti inflammatory. This will help.
