Inspired by a challenge from a friend...

What four albums can you listen all the way through without skipping a track? These maybe aren't your favorite artists or albums, but just a good from front to back album.

*No one is going to be a music snob so don't be shy.
** Bonus point for pictures of the album covers.

Alice in Chains MTV Live
Any Led Zeppelin but especially Physical Graffiti
Bob Seger Live Bullet...the way concerts should fucking be...God I am lucky to have seen the best bands ever live
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon

It was different for us Boomers. I owned vinyl...and 8-tracks...and I made my own cassettes. You saved up money and everyone would be there for the needle drop. Music...united us.

Wow. Really difficult. There are a LOT. But only four. OK.

Frampton Comes Alive
David Bowie - either Low or Ziggy Stardust
Santana - pick one. I'm his biggest fan.
Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy

Abbey Road ~ Beatles (first album I ever bought myself)

Wicked Grin ~ John Hammond (all Tom Waits covers)

Mermaid Avenue ~ Billy Bragg and Wilco (All previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics )

Waiting for Columbus ~ Little Feat

~bonus~

Europe '72 ~ Grateful Dead. Really only three of the four sides - it is a double album, but it was very influential to me and I wore out two copies on vinyl back in the day.

Hm, I’m not a boomer or technically gen x and had (still have) records. I also saved up all my money. And I also made mix tapes.

Let's get this thread to 5000 so I can retire!

Do you gravitate towards.vertain genders for advice? Do you trust one gender more than the other for specific types of advice? Does that change between lit and life?

To avoid skipping....I try my best not to ask for advice. Personal advice, I try hard not to go there. And when I do, I find women tend to give advice on what they want to see as the outcome even if it’s shit. For financial and career advice, I almost always ask my father before anyone else. Generally, though, I trust my instincts and prepare for the fallout.

There is no easy answer so I’ll do my top five, since 4 is impossible, FOR NOW and in no order

Robyn — body talk
Joy Division — unknown pleasures
Bleachers — strange desire
Pulp — his n hers
Chvrches — every eye open

I lack the skill to make a collage for you all at this time.

look up something you know and like on you tube
watch/ listen and scroll down it will give a list of suggestions based on
your choice just keep rolling with it

I feel like an alien asking this question but how do you all discover new music?

SiriusXM Alt Nation, SiriusXMU, iTunes "people also bought," recommendations from friends, YouTube research, to name a few

the cool thing these days is that if you hear something you like, you can sample more of that band's music with a click or two, or find other bands in the same genre/sub-genre

It’s sure as hell out there to be discovered. Tons of websites devoted to new music, internet and indie radio stations or hell even Spotify and Pandora. Or just listen to stuff I post in music thread.

I just walk through the woods and listen to the songs of the will-o'-the-wisps murmuring melodies to me.

Or maybe my ear buds are broken again. One or the other.

1) spotify - it gives you the option of an artist’s ‘station’ so it plays similar music.
2) spotify - I like songs and it recommends others based on my likes
3) SoulCycle - seriously. Few things have opened my eyes to new music in the last few years than that class
4) Instagram - I follow other my spin instructors and they are always sharing new music

Oh yeah forgot about Sirius XMU. I hear a lot great new shit on there. Free internet radio called Soma FM...Bagel Radio and Indie Pop Rocks are great.

And Fiona Apple released a new album today so go listen to that right now because it will probably be the best thing released this year.

If I was in a band and I wanted to be heard, i would do shitloads of covers and post them online. Case in point...look at Larkin Poe. They have been around for a long time...and they are just now being noticed by those outside their circle.

https://youtu.be/l5dqS251D98.

That is the first video I saw of them...a result of a Samantha Fish search. I loved it...so I started searching more and more...and found they had tons of covers...like this...

https://youtu.be/zUT47VgZ0Aw

So then I said...fuck...what about their music?

Much of it is luck.

Edit: I search for live music only. That is the only way in my opinion to tell how good they really are.

I'll second everyone and say Spotify. There are also podcasts dedicated to discussing music of all genres and styles. I do think people get in a genre rut and dont even let themselves experience new kinds of music.

Spotify for me. I follow loads of different new music playlists and genre playlists that get updated regularly and just pick and choose what I like for my own.

I’ve not had a great experience with Spotify. Most of the things it thinks I’ll like... it’s not very accurate for me. Still, I am open to suggestions when people make em, ‘Ladies’ above being a good example, so now I want to find more from the artist.
