I don't understand how anyone owns a dog and does not make any effort whatsoever to train them. As if you just buy, them feed them, and let them annoy the neighbors. At this point I'm not sure how long I've lived here but at least a couple of years and the dog across the street still barks incessantly at my comings and goings. It's no skin off my nose, the dog and I sleep days, but they've got to listen to that dog bark whenever I come or go at some odd hours. You never even hear them shush it. I'm sure if you ask the dog he would insist that his owners are no doubt pleased at his vigilance.
I've never met a dog that wasn't happiest when he's performing some task.
When a dog finally gets that you placing a biscuit on his nose for him to remain motionless until given permission is a parlor trick.. the dog is more pleased with performing trick that he is at getting the biscuit. I had (what you would cal an Alsatian) that would pause and grin for a second once I said release, before flicking it into the air and then catching it. I had an overly enthusiastic Yellow Lab that would try the same trick but would alternatively wiggle the biscuit off wagging its tail or miss catching it.
