The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 04: Come On In

I don't know anything about Hole.

Cosima has a 0.3006 loaded for deer, and she knows how to use it, but she also knows that "It's family. That's not the answer." Father Saavedra agrees.

The answer as far as I have it, is that the man who loves her beats the shit out of her rapist, confronts her father, and is rejected by the woman he loves because -- well, because she's confused.

And then we get to the denouement
.

Hole is punk/hard rock (i'm not exactly sure how it'd be defined) band that was fronted by Courtney Love (who later married Kurt Cobain). It was known for it's angry feminist anthems.

Interestingly, I'd originally planned to write that she should get a thirty ought six with buck shot, but since I don't hunt, i wasn't sure that was correct, and decided to be more vague. I'd still advocate for Cosima to unload a shell in the rapist's ass, but she's your character....

My mom tells a (probably aprochryphal) story about using a double barrel shotgun on some gypsies who were stealing from her yard (in Greece in 1969). Her story is that one shell had birdshot and the other had rock salt. She contends that it was an effective deterrent...

NW - I am curious though, if this is a story for Lit, or somewhere else?

A thirty ought six is a rifle, and I've never heard of loading one with shot. They aren't used as a non-lethal deterrent. They are lethal. In the opening scene of the story the male protagonist scrambles up a rocky trail and when he stands up at the top he finds himself looking down her gun barrel. Nice way to start a relationship, eh?

The story is for Lit. It's a Romance and if I get it done in time it'll go into the Summer Lovin' contest. Otherwise, it'll just go into Romance.

See, now you know why I went with vague, since I clearly don't know what I'm talking about. :) ;)

The story my mom tells involves a shotgun, for sure. I dont remember what gauge.

That could definitely be an interesting way to start a relationship, depending on how her beau reacts. In fact I could see myself respecting a guy who held himself together if I was aiming something lethal at him.

I was curious Because I'm working on a story with two characters who were victims of sexual abuse in their pasts. I've mentioned it obliquely, and with no details. But that history is a big part of their motivations for current behavior. I wasn't sure if that backstory would pass Laurel's filters. But if you're confident that your plot is acceptable, then I'm less worried about mine.

It's too hot here for coffee. I usually drink it in the summer but this summer haven't had the taste for it much. Plenty of unsweetened iced tea though.

I volunteered all day yesterday at the food pantry, 9 am to 6 pm, that makes for a long day! BUT we have a new local restaurant https://www.chickensaladchick.com/edwardsville/
and they donate any leftover product after two days so right now the food pantry has a lot of chicken salad. All kinds of flavors, and plain too. We had a bunch leftover yesterday and not another food pantry until Friday so the volunteers were sent home with chicken salad. I brought home a jalapeno one and one called Sassy Scotty that has cheese and bacon in it. Pretty yummy!
Also, we had a lot of leftover produce which doesn't keep so I brought home some heirloom tomatoes a local farmer donated. I guess that's a perk of volunteering there.

Today I went for a job interview at Kohl's and got hired on the spot, but I haven't gotten my emails for paperwork or anything yet so I'm kind of paranoid.

I also applied at the post office and kinda have my fingers crossed they'll at least call me for an interview because the pay is about double and they have benefits, but we'll see I guess.

Need to get my next chapter polished and submitted! Trying to get one up every 1-2 weeks. I had a lot written, but then took that detour...

Hannah in Love is Enough has childhood physical and sexual abuse in her background. It's fundamental to the character, mentioned twice that I can think of, and it's the focus of a long, very emotional scene.

You can use the back story, but you can't describe the event.

In the current story (which I don't even have a name for yet), what Cosima says is, "He raped me. I didn’t know what he was doing, really. I just knew that he hurt me."

Well now, after all that heat, we got rain; I got soaked.
So it's 'heating ON' and chill out with a mug full of Tea this evening.

Took a lot of polishing, but I just submitted my summer contest story. Let's hope I can keep up the writing schedule I created for myself over the last two weeks and stay at least somewhat productive. Already have a new story picked from my plot bunny file, and I'm really excited about it. Probably going to be a bit longer than my first two submissions, but I think I should be able to handle that. And it's not for a contest this time, so no pressure on that either. The pressure did keep me writing though, so I guess I'll find out if the lack of a deadline turns out to be a good or a bad thing.

Evening coffee is ready.

A little rain off and on today so the temp was down a little. About 10 degrees lower than yesterday. Two boats cut out and one frame with bow, transom, and sides glued, nailed, and screwed. The bottom will go on tomorrow.

Minor pedantry: there's a dash in the middle, ".30-06". The ".30" is a measurement, the "06" refers to the year it was adopted, to avoid confusion with various other cartridges that are also .30 caliber but not compatible. I mention this only because somebody's gonna grumble at you in the comments if you write it that way.

I think they were calling it "grunge" or "alt-rock" at the time, but I never did figure out where the lines were drawn between those genres.

Love married Cobain before Hole got big. The song I linked is off "Live Through This", which came out a week after Cobain very famously died; I don't know whether that's good or bad timing.

For sales, good timing. Taste-wise, maybe a little tacky. But, Courtney Love and Hole... a tad academic, splitting those hairs.

Rock n Roll deaths are always good for sales. Always. As Jim Morrison said, "You can start a religion..."

(Wanders in hoping for some of Pixie's strong Turkish coffee and a piece of baklava for morning tea. Not seeing any, grabs a mug of TX 's evening coffee and a donut. Heads back to the office to deal with the auditors requests.)

This reminds me, I have a box of Turkish delight sitting downstairs. I should do something about that.

Thanks for the info. So far there are two mentions of the abuse in the past, even less specific than your sentance. There's an allusion to a person in a position of authority abusing that authority, and another scene in which one character is revealed to have used a particular destructive coping mechanism that's often associated with sexual abuse. And then the actions of the person are referenced again. And it's explictly stated at the beginning of the story that all the characters are now in their mid 30s.

So that's one question answered.

Now, is 1130PM too late for coffee?

That sentence hasn't passed muster yet, but I'm not really worried about it. Laurel may instruct me otherwise. That's not my biggest problem with the story.

Ah - sunshine !
Gosh - I thought it had gone into hibernation.
But now it's time for some nice coffee, I think.
OK; who's moved the pot ?

Just caught and released a spider almost bigger than my desire to be the man of the house. It was a close call though, and some unmanly sounds may or my not have been made.

Would you mind coming here? I saw a tarantula in my house the other day. Haven't seen it since, so could you come hunt him down and remove him to the outside? Thanks ;)

Tarantula, huh? Well eh, you see... I ehm... Have this thing I need to do. Urgently. So yeah... Good luck with that, maybe next time...

Tarantulas live south of here. Actually, I like the hairy little beasties.

Fresh coffee for the morning crowd.

It seems my latest entry in the Summer contest was to close to RL to satisfy some two handed jerkers. Erotica as opposed to porn. I liked it so.... There. :D

Bacon and biscuits for breakfast.

I don't mind them outside, I just don't want them INSIDE.

Sigh, well... I had to at least ask.
