Sounds like the closet flange rusted out. Maybe piece of it gitbwedged in the pipe causing the obstruction.
If the plumbing had been backing up and the wax ring didn't seal properly it would make sense that the moisture wood rot out the closet flange so it might be the other direction.
I'm wrong about how I remember the closet flange mounting to the floor and the height. It actually sits on top of the concrete and bolts hold it to the concrete. The little porcelain nipple that comes down to dump waste into the pipe where the closet flange is doesn't quite reach all the way down to the floor and that Gap is what is filled by the wax ring.

Must be a rule 34 thing because there doesn't seem to be anyone that has modest-sized pictures of a closet flange. They all seem to be hi-rez porntastic quality.
