The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 04: Come On In

I just retuned from a rejuvenating vacation back home in Maine. Of course, we picked the hottest two weeks in state history...

I hope everyone is doing well.

I wrote my ass off while I was traveling. Now I have no ass, but all or large parts of my next three submissions written.

Welcome back! Too bad about the ass.

Maine?

Sorry for the rather abrupt entry but the coast of Maine is one of my fave places to be so just had to jump in. Love to be in Boothbay Harbor, Georgetown, and other places mid-coast. I'm a kayaker as well as someone that loves to write.

Same here. I've got some family up in Maine and will be visiting next month. Not sure I'll have much time to kayak but I do plenty of that closer to home anyway. Gotta love that gorgeous coastline.

I grew up in Waldo County, lived in Bangor for a while.

We drove around the state, so I could show it off to my husband, who had only been there once, and that was in winter. Other than that he insisted on attending the annual Acadia Traffic Festival, we had a wonderful time.

We thought about going to Boothbay Harbor, but instead, we drove down Harpswell Neck to eat at the Dolphin Marina that day.

Love the cod cakes at the Maine Diner. We head up a few times a year, though the crowds suck since Guy Fieri or Anthony Bourdain or whoever it was came by.

We're best described conditions as "cloudy bright".
It's really not very nice, even for a camera.

Any coffee left please?

The funny thing is I can't stand sea food but I love to visit the marinas and wharfs.

I’m thinking it’s more properly “wharves.”

Am I alone in this, or have I simply read too much Tolkien?

Excellent sentiment, in any case. A busy waterfront is a delightful place.

.
.

Merriam Webster lists both.

Concise Oxford:-
" wharf noun (plural wharves or wharfs) a level quayside area to which a ship may be moored to load and unload.
– origin Old English hwearf, of Germanic origin
."

Like a great many folks, I've spent a great time one them. It's all that activity. . . .

Time, I think, for a mug of decent Tea.

No, the dwarfs-dwarves dichotomy.

I think I recall that the Christopher Tolkien works spell out that JRRT had a big debate in his mind about which to use. He went back and forth for years. I think that “dwarfs” was the more accepted usage at that time, but that JRRT thought “dwarves” sounded better and went through intense linguistic gymnastics to justify it to himself.

Fascinating man. His mind worked in an interesting way.

Ha - too late for tea here - I'll be up all night though a nice cuppa Earl Grey early in the AM is just lovely.

I think I like wharf better - it's softer which suits the memory I have.

Tying into another thread about giving away enough info to figure out who you are, it's morning tea time - with coffee - and I'm looking over a harbour at a wharf from my office window. It's a sunny, crisp winters day. Shame I'm at work...

I grilled a steak tonight. It was the thickest steak I've ever tried to grill, and it got thicker on the grill. It was a good two inches thick, and I had to do it on a schedule so my wife could eat before she went to work.

Cooking took twice as long as I'd allocated for it, and I pulled the steak off the grill as soon as the temperature said it was rare. It was very rare--at first. It didn't have time to rest before we cut into it, but by the time we were done it was more to the medium-rare side.

Note to self. Allow time for a thick steak to rest.

Worth the wait for a good steak.

I've totally corrupted M'lady - when she first arrived here she thought US portions of meat were insane. Now she's an unabashed carnivore, even if it means she has to skip another meal to be able to deal with her share.

Though we usually go for steaks in the 1.5 inch range.

What sides do you like?

Ah yes. I LOVE a good double entendre.

Java's right. A good steak is worth waiting for. Every time a good steak gets ruined, an angel loses her wings.

With a big steak, pretty much none. I go completely carnivore. Starchy stuff is my least popular side. I'll do a salad sometimes. With a smaller steak, I might add roasted potatoes, and then throw them away.

I planked a portion of a salmon filet a couple days ago and paired it with baked eggplant (topped with tomato, oregano and reggiano), and that was a great combo.

With a big enough steak . . . yeah.

But there's a steak place we like (fortunately for my waistline, four hours away) that does amazing BBQ mushrooms and grilled artichokes.

At home, we'll occasionally do the grilled artichoke thing, or corn in the husk on the same grill. Or if we're feeling totally old school, creamed spinach.

If I want to be totally decadent, I'll add a glass or two of a good wine. But beer, or good coffee works, too.

Got a sore throat this morning. Either it's from the constant draft of having windows open to cool down the house, or I'm getting sick. Either way, I'll stick to a nice hot tea for now.

Did you ever go to Flatholm ?
The Fog Horn was a real blower !

Never went to FlatHolm. Gloucester folk never venture into Wales if they can help it!

You're right about the foghorn; I reckon it could be heard in both Somerset and South Wales on a still night.

An added point HP. How many people on Lit do you reckon would know about FlatHolm's part in Radio History?

Okay, okay, I'll make coffee.

It's far to late to be so early.

Things to do so an early start.

Very Few, I suspect. We're all too used to the transatlantic test.
Which reminds me; I must do something about my aerial. . . .

Time, first, however, for a Coffee.

I'll have one of those coffees, please, Tex.

Oddest weather I've ever seen yesterday. Warnings of extreme thunderstorm risk all day and rumours of funnel clouds being spotted, but what we got was an hour of heavy rain, with brilliant sunshine at the same time. And, no, it wasn't the neighbour watering his lawn.

Sorry, that was in the back yard. The front yard was just plain sunny for most of the storm. And, no, it's not The Ponderosa.

Make it a double, Tex.
