US President Donald Trump is approving the sale of billions of dollars' worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, citing Iranian threats to its arch rival. Mr Trump invoked a rarely used aspect of federal law to push through the $8bn (£6bn) deal - bypassing Congress.

He did so by declaring that ongoing tensions with Iran amounted to a national emergency.

The move has angered those who fear the weapons may be used against civilians in Yemen by Saudi-led forces.

Members of Congress have heavily criticised Saudi Arabia's human rights record over its role in the Yemen conflict and for the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last October.

IOKIYAR

But weapon sales to countries in the middle east have never come back to bite us in the ass so I'm sure it will be fine. To say nothing of the methodology.

Sweet!!

Just like it ok to expand that PATRIOT act you condemned Bush for so you can bomb US citizens without due process....as long as you're a Democrat.

They haven't LOL :D

"Fear the use against civilians" huh? There are no civilians in the middle east. Those people have spent the past 1300 years killing each other when they weren't killing outsiders.

who the fuck is Jamal Khashoggi and why the fuck should ANYONE care about Jamal Khashoggi:mad:

Not even 1% of $8 billion in weapons?

Al Qaeda made good use of "dual use" weapons some 17¾ years ago.

GFY bigot.

I have Mid-East neighbours. They are civilized.

Again, GFY, bellisarius, you bigot.

He's for free speech: something alien to child-murder-approving nazi-collaborators such as yourself.

When it comes to killing Americans and Jews, Middle Easterners are bush leaguers compared to Europeans.

Your beloved KKK and other homocidal bigots might have killed more Americans—at least Iraqis can claim defense of country—which the US has ruined much of.

Now go defend your nazi friend, kapo.

The self-loathing Jew supports 45 and Nazis.

The actual news yesterday. But the responses are funny.

Senate Votes to Block Trump’s Arms Sales to Gulf Nations in Bipartisan Rebuke

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted to block the sale of billions of dollars of munitions to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, in a sharp and bipartisan rebuke of the Trump administration’s attempt to circumvent Congress to allow the exports by declaring an emergency over Iran.

In three back-to-back votes, Republicans joined Democrats to register their growing anger with the administration’s use of emergency power to cut lawmakers out of national security decisions, as well as the White House’s unflagging support for the Saudis despite congressional pressure to punish Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after the killing in October of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A United Nations report released Wednesday made the most authoritative case to date that responsibility for the killing and its cover-up lies at the highest levels of the Saudi royal court.

Nope....Check the kill ratios

Last I checked the best weapons Al Qaeda managed to muster against us were domestic airliners, not our own weapons we sold them.

The closest we've come to having gear we've sold bite us in the ass were the F-14 Tomcats we sold Iran back in the 70's....they've been broken down and obsolete for some time now.

I did like this part though.

Uh oh....suddenly authority is a problem?? You mean a less than perfect party puppet is using it how those who gave POTUS that authority don't like??

No way.....

We should do the "progressive" thing and give the government MORE power.

The Kansas City Shuffle.

Plant bombs, make it look like Iran.
Send a drone into their airspace, hoping they'll shoot it down.
Authorize arms deal to the Saudis in the reaction cycle.
Forgive Iran.

And they said Trump couldn't play Politics.

“At 13:02, inside the Consulate, Mr. Mutreb and Dr. Tubaigy had a conversation just minutes before Mr. Khashoggi entered. Mr. Mutreb asked whether it will 'be possible to put the trunk in a bag?'
"Dr. Tubaigy replied 'No. Too heavy.' He expressed hope that it would 'be easy. Joints will be separated. It is not a problem. The body is heavy. First time I cut on the ground. If we take plastic bags and cut it into pieces, it will be finished. We will wrap each of them.' 'Leather bags.' There was a reference to cutting skin. Dr. Tubaigny also expressed concerns: 'My direct manager is not aware of what I am doing. There is nobody to protect me.'
"At the end of the conversation, Mr. Mutreb asked whether 'the sacrificial animal' has arrived. At 13:13, a voice said 'he has arrived.' In these recordings heard by the Special Rapporteur, Mr. Khashoggi's name was not mentioned."

"In the recordings, sounds of a struggle can be heard during which the following statements could also be heard: 'Did he sleep?' 'He raises his head.' 'Keep pushing.' 'Push here; don't remove your hand; push it.' "

I heard or read somewhere that that attack cost Al Qaeda about half a million. On the other hand, it was a bit of a sandbagging which fortunately hasn't repeated itself, thank goodness.

I post with an admitted level of ignorance but I wonder if some of the weapons that Islamic State got from from Iraqi forces when they gave up and ran were American-made.

I don't trust the Saudis anymore than I do the Iranians. I'm sure there are elements of their dictatorship that will divert at least a little bit of weaponry to groups the US—or anyone opposing terror or Islamo-fascism—would not want those weapons going to. I'm not quite thinking the heavy stuff like fighter craft, but smaller weapons. If the 911 hijackers could do what they did with box-cutters, and training in martial arts and flying jet craft, what could even $80 million—1% of $8 billion—in diverted weaponry do?

Well, getting wrecked on the home front doesn't make power projection towards a far more on guard enemy a very doable thing.

There have been attempts and there are no doubt operations in the works now.

Let's hope we never get so comfortable or silly to think nobody wants to hurt us and decide to totally drop our guard.

100% some where.....question is how many?

I'd say sub 10% from my personal point of view, the vast majority of the small arms weapons we encountered were Soviet/Chinese made.

IDK if there were ever any official numbers on that.

I don't trust the Saudis anymore than I do the Iranians.

Me either, but I'm far less directly threatened by them at the same time.

They simply aren't as openly hostile.

They would have to get it to the US first.

You ever try and bring artillery or surface to air missiles onto a Delta flight? Just doesn't happen. They might at some point in the future kill some of our troops but I figure it would be highly unlikely they will be used in a direct attack on the US by anyone in the ME.

he'll still probably pass it, despite those who know better being against it.

and apparently he had a "moment of clarity", saying 150 lives were not worth the shooting down of an unmanned drone. correct. seems a wee bit odd that he failed to mention the limpet mines... which leads me to think he already knows it wasn't the iranians and the drone WAS in iranian airspace

who the fuck is Jamal Khashoggi and why the fuck should ANYONE care about Jamal Khashoggi:mad:

He was an agent of the State who went rogue and decided to leak State secrets and
destabilize the state while on the payroll of two other third parties.
He was whacked. No shocker there if
you are a multiculturalist and
not an anthropomorphic.

Robert and chipbutty have just reached a new level of stupidity...

Saudi Arabia itself had nothing to do with 9-11.
That was radical world-wide Islam operating
out of Afghanistan under the protection
of the fucking Taliban...
