China's armed forces alone outnumber the population of several major US cities combined. They could win a ground war simply by attrition, basically the way the Russians stopped the German invasion.

We weren't 'at war' with China and had no legal grounds to invade their territory. If we had, how do you think that would have turned out? Horribly. Millions of losses, many of them ours.

Having the unpleasant distinction of being the only nation to date to unleash nuclear weapons on a non-combatant civilian population once is bad enough. Twice would have been unforgivable.

The best thing to have done in the late 40s would have been to admit the evils of our actions in two Japanese cities and commit to ending all development of nuclear weapons worldwide. The madness of MAD would never have happened.
