Rob's acorn analogy is pretty sound - it's surprising you can't get that. An acorn isn't a potential coconut tree, any more than a human embryo isn't a potential fish. That's why we have to put labels on the seeds - so we know what they are potentially going to grow into.

Does that mean when I took the morning after pill a few months ago, I was killing an unborn baby? (Well, maybe - it wasn't actually that likely that I was pregnant, but even though I'm 52 and effectively single, clearly if I was pregnant, I should have had the baby, because, y'know, the sanctity of life and everything.)
