think i've decided on this, or something as close to it as i can make. it'll be the first rug i've made since a kid; there were other designs i preferred but they would be too hard, i think. we'll see how this goes.

That should be awesome.
well, the plan is to take the design as is - print it out, grid it, draw it onto the 44"x60" canvas then use the picture as guide for the colour shadings. that's the plan... i'll see how the drawing out part goes before fully committing. the shapes look reasonably easy to reproduce and the naturally 'fuzzy' appearance of focus should suit a hand-made rug. fingers crossed, anyways

Why not just print it on the canvas? I realize that's quicker.....

There is a lot of "art" printing done on canvas. Maybe it's not the right kind of canvas?
But, you should be able to source an old overhead projector, and project the image onto your rug blank on the wall. The library or a school might have one of these you use. Otherwise, they might have a digital projector (now becoming extinct due to smartboards) you can rent for a day.
