In my opinion there are two fetishes here, related but entirely different.

Total agreement! I totally live with your second point...lol. It will never happen in my situation, but it sure is fun to envision. The cuckold aspect is a big zero, or less than zero, for me.

Hmmm, I'm different from a lot of the posters here. I love the idea of watching other men fuck my wife, either solo or in a gang-bang situation. There is an excellent account of this practice in Medieval time in the book Sarum—not the watching, but agreeing to and encouraging it. In this case, the behavior is for (ostensibly) purely economic reasons, not for kinky ones—although the wife certainly has no complaints. Men who did this, for whatever reasons, were called "wittols." Some in the modern kink world have resurrected this term to distinguish themselves from cuckolds, but more commonly, the woman is called a "hot wife," and the practice, "hotwifing," or similar.

I believe the reason the two terms are now becoming so badly conflated is because the word "cuckold," itself, has become very trendy. A lot of people who want to engage in wife-sharing want to apply this popular label to themselves—but they want nothing to do with the humiliation and implicit emasculation that go with it. So rather than use one of the terms that traditionally apply, they call themselves by the trendier "cuckold" and then deny that humiliation has anything to do with the word.
