The entire relevant sentence reads: "We could not simply do a poll of men, who might not honestly answer questions about their deepest insecurities." I absolutely guarantee if they'd interviewed actual men, you be saying something like 'Of course people aren't going to be honest about that shit'.

What they've done is actually a pretty nifty way around the issue of measuring the concept, and as they state in the article, it's something that's been done before. And no, they didn't 'pull the data out of their arses' - data mining from online information is a pretty new, but also well recognised means of doing research.

Also ... not exactly surprising.

Couple of things

1: These results are correlative, not necessarily causational, but they are tied to belief structures that drive behavior. I, personally, don't like the methodology, because I do think you could devise a questionnaire with enough filler questions that you could accurately measure this, it's been done before. We've used the MAQ to assess how toxic masculinity causes risky, aggressive, or stupid behavior in males of various populations and successfully used the results to build treatment plans for things like risky sexual behavior that can help in reducing STIs. So I don't know why they couldn't use that here. Yeah, people are going to lie, but people ALWAYS lie on self-admittance, so we expect a margin of error.

Having said that, those guys DO display traits that we would expect to see, and many of the questions are if they have interest or awareness of the topics they looked for in search results. They're basically doing the same thing but on population trends instead of a sample group that they would then generalize. But I would kind of expect the margin of error to be higher doing it that way because there are too many factors that could influence search history. My dick works fine, but I've googled ED because it was going to come up in a story I was writing or whatever. There's just gonna be a lot of fluff in those results. But it does look like they took that into account, so we can trust that the results are accurate-

It's just super weird to me that two psychologists are using sociological methodology rather than psychological methodology.

2: But, we do know that there is a causational relationship between insecurity of a male's gender identity when there is a high desire to adhere to the culture's gender role and conservative political belief structures from a shitton of other studies, so like... they're not wrong, you just have to know what other studies they're pulling from. The less secure you are in your gender identity, the more likely you are to hold conservative beliefs. That just is a fact that's backed up by decades of research and is a big part of hedgemonic masculinity. That is, if you feel you NEED that role to maintain any kind of social power and it's a big part of your identity, that you couldn't command social power WITHOUT a strict gender divide, you're going to be more conservative. If you're more secure in your gender identity, that is, you believe in yourself and your ability to wield social power even if you didn't have a social construct of masculinity to prop you up, you tend to hold more liberal beliefs- in part because conservatism is dedicated to maintaining those "traditional" structures in a way that people who are secure in their self identity just don't need because they aren't threatened by change.
