If I experimented and turned off anonymous comments, why can I still get them on my reviews wall?

Are they just hidden, and not blocked? Yes, I turned off anonymous comments so real readers who aren't cowardly trolls wouldn't have to deal with them, but am I missing something here?

They are just hidden from everyone but you (and the Web admin). What's the problem?

Try logging out then back in. I don't see any anon comments anywhere. Anon can't comment at all when it's turned off.

I just thought it blocked the ability of reviews to be posted at all. Doesn't matter to me, per se, I wanted to make sure it was working is all.

When you turn off anonymous comments, it prevents people from leaving a comment unless they're logged in under a user name, or from sending an email without an email address entered, for however long that option is ticked. You shouldn't see any new comments from users who aren't logged in.

Existing anonymous comments aren't removed. That's up to you to do, if you wish.

And what I was noting was that they'll remain on your comment file on your author's page. They just won't show to readers anymore.

I mostly don't care, outside of just accommodating my readers who are upset by the trolls. I just wanted to make sure it was working. If they're just invisible, groovy. At least my sane readers don't have to endure that incel troll nonsense.

Ah well. I guess registered users can post recruited as anonymous, side troll reviews still show up. Damned if I see the point of allowing that. You'd think it was to keep cowards from making anonymous comments.

Welp, my readers asked, I tried. I'm not willing to turn off all comments because of this. Let the cowards have their fun. I guess I'll just do my due diligence and tell Laurel anyway.

If you have anonymous comments turned off, the option to post as anonymous for logged in users shouldn't be available at all. Users who aren't logged in shouldn't have any available comment options at all.

If you're still getting anonymous comments, did you make sure you hit the "Save Changes" button after ticking the appropriate option?

ETA: Went and checked. You do indeed have anonymous comments turned off. While logged in, the option to post as anonymous isn't available. When logged out, the only option is to log in and post as a registered user.

Unless someone is using some computer kung-fu to get around it, you shouldn't be getting any anonymous comments, starting the moment you turned them off.

And if all else fails, it is possible to delete comments from your control panel. You probably already know this, but if you don't mind a little "maintenance every once in awhile...just select the "comment icon" to the right of the story title, all comments are shown and each one has a little trashcan next to it. You can delete any comment you find offensive regardless of who posted it.

I feel like the ones who leave "trollish" and offensive comments do not deserve any respect or platform rights to post on my page. My opinion is, 'Go write your own story if it's so important to get your opinion out there. It's nice to clean out the clutter and trash once in awhile ;)

Something's going around in circles here. If the author can see comments on his/her page, she/he didn't have comments turned off. I think what's being referred to here are comments that got posted on the story (comments weren't turned off), the author deleted them, but they still showed on the author's page (they do, but they don't appear on the story viewable by readers anymore).

Once I've deleted a comment, I've never seen it again in any part of the interface. From the public perspective, it's been gone. Only Laurel could access that data once removed by the author, in order to process reports related to the deleted comment.

I deleted one comment long ago and wish I hadn't -- a comment means I've provoked a reader enough to react. They are my badges of honor. I can tell that some comments are deleted before I can see them. Those must be really bad! But I've received no death threats for several years now. I must be slowing down.

Well, I do. It stays right there in a "View" listing. Guess I'm not special like you are.

Ah, wait a minute. The recent activity page will still show that the comment was made, I believe. That doesn't get deleted, if I remember correctly. In the new interface, that's simply a notification, which links to the story comment page, where the comment no longer exists. It's also gone from the story's comment moderation.

In the old interface, it provided a preview of the comment, so I suppose that would still be there.

I seem to remember those vanishing as well, but that may only be when Laurel deleted the comment. I typically left up comments I reported as spam, just to ensure she had the data, even though I was fairly certain she could access it if I deleted it.

Regardless, that should be gone soon enough. 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days, depending upon how far back you want to dig. If it's something you don't want to see, I don't know why you would keep looking at the longer duration tabs, so it should be 1 day of irritation at best.

I've received some incel troll comments since turning off anonymous reviews, so I was wondering if something was bajankajanked. A trog commented that I'd turned them off and said he'd keep being seen anyway.

Doubtless he's reading all this, but my interest is limited. So everyone actually runs my comments section for me, she just brings things to my attention if need be, I almost never check them myself.

Thank you, though, for the input. I guess I'll inform Laurel, see what happens.

I've only deleted one that seemed completely irrelevant.

But yes, sometimes a "critical," even rude comment can be more interesting than it first appears. In a recent story I first replied to a criticism with some jokey sarcasm. Then I replied again because the commenter - possibly inadvertently -made me see a new side to the story.
