Andrew Johnson was impeached when Congress passed a law with a veto-proof majority that forbade Johnson from firing his Secretary of War, then he went ahead and fired his Secretary of War anyway.
Bill Clinton was impeached when he had an affair with a White House intern and tried to cover it up.
Donald Trump has committed far more serious offences than either Andrew Johnson or Bill Clinton and yet impeachment proceeding have yet to begin.
I’m not even going to go into the many times that Trump has cheated on all three of his wives. This is a moral failing on Trump’s part, however, it’s a very foolish reason for instigating impeachment hearings. If Congress impeaches a president, it should be about abusing his presidential powers, refusing to uphold the United States Constitution, putting America’s national security at risk, or betraying America to a foreign enemy.
From the moment he took office, Trump refused to uphold the United States Constitution. Trump’s refusal to divest from his business interests has placed him in direct violation of the US Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause and Domestic Emoluments Clause. Trump’s violations of the Emoluments clause have been both deliberate and blatant. He’s using the White House as a base of operations to siphon as much money as possible from the U.S. government and from foreign governments and funnel it directly into his family’s businesses.
Trump’s chromic violations of the Emoluments clause would be enough to justify impeaching him, however, Trump has given us so much more than that. He’s given us a whole LIST of very valid reasons for why Congress should be impeaching him right now!
The United States Constitution specifically states that America’s Free Press shall not have their freedoms infringed by the United States government. It’s one of the bedrock principles that America was founded upon, however, from the very beginning Trump has declared himself to be at war with America’s Free Press and has constantly sought way to strip America’s media outlets of their ability to investigate him and report on what he’s doing.
Trump took an oath to protect the First Amendment, however, Trump routinely violates that oath and has led an unprecedented assault on the American media over the past three years, falsely claiming that coverage unfavorable to him is “fake news” and declaring journalists to be enemies of the public. He has frequently urged supporters at rallies to direct abuse at individual reporters, leading some to hire bodyguards.
Trump has also shown his contempt and hostility towards the United States Constitution with blatant condemnations of the American People’s right to protest.
Trump claims that it is “embarrassing” that America allows its people the right to protest, and said that protesters should lose their jobs or be met with violence for daring to speak out. He seems to want to be dictator and take away First Amendment freedoms from the American People.
Trump has also abducted and jailed thousands of people (including small children and even infants) who were fleeing war in their own nations and seeking refuge here in the United States. Trump has locked these people in cages without charge or trial and kept them locked up under cruel and unusual conditions, separating children from their parents, denying them medical care, denying them clean water and food and Trump’s Border Patrol and Customs officials have even committed sexual and physical assault against these children.
Impeaching Trump for the crimes listed above would be totally justified, however, we’re not done yet. There’s more.
Trump has blatantly abused the power of his office by directing the FBI, the Justice Department and other federal agencies to investigate, harass and prosecute his critics and political opponents. This is the sort of thing that you see in third world dictatorships. Using the FBI, the Justice Department, Federal Marshalls etc. to act as Trump’s personal squad of bullies, goons and enforcers undoes the accomplishments of America’s Founding Fathers, erodes the rule of law, undermines the independence of law enforcement from politics, and compromises the constitutional right to due process of law.
Trump has already admitted that he fired James Comey to obstruct the investigation into his secret dealings with the Russians. He’s indicated a willingness to fire Jefferson Sessions and Rod Rosenstein for the same reason. These are all textbook examples of obstruction of Justice.
The President of the United States of America is SUPPOSED to be America’s chief law enforcement official. If Trump is going to obstruct America’s law enforcement officers in their duties, he must go. He’s sabotaging America.
And when judges make rulings against Donald Trump, Trump declared them to be “fake judges” and then bad-mouths the United States Constitution, because it doesn’t allow him to be a dictator, it doesn’t place him above the law, and forces him to respect judicial rulings. Trump is supposed to be protecting and defending the United States Constitution, instead he tells us that he hates the U.S. Constitution and that he wants to get rid of it.
Furthermore, Trump is violating his oath of office by refusing to implement sanctions that Congress approved with a veto-proof majority. There is no legal way for Trump to do this. Trump is just breaking the law, plain and simple. Trump is ignoring American law and putting the needs and desires of a foreign government ahead of the needs and desires of the United States of America. Trump has blatantly shown that his loyalties to Russia outweigh his loyalties to the United States of America.
He has also shown behavior that is blatantly anti-American by advocating illegal violence, giving aid and comfort to white supremacists and neo-Nazis, and undermining constitutional protections of equal protection under the law, thus putting the lives of American minorities at risk and validating the irrational hatreds and fears of racists, white supremacists and neo-Nazis, encouraging them to commit more violent crimes and making an already difficult situation MUCH MORE difficult for America’s law enforcement professionals.
The way Trump has abused the president’s pardon power, is also greatly disturbing and has shown Trump is willing to use it to protect right-wing criminals, rather than to implement justice for those who have proven to be truly repentant, truly innocent, unjustly accused and unjustly sentenced.
In reflection of just how serious they are, the Justice Department uses an elaborate vetting process for presidential pardons that reviews all applicants. Because of these guidelines, and the crush of people seeking relief, obtaining a pardon is USUALLY quite difficult and time-consuming.
Trump doesn’t care if the person he pardons is worthy, repentant or has been vetted. He has ignored any pretense of process and dismissed all important advisory regulations.
Trump pardoned the former sheriff of Arizona’s largest county, Joe Arpaio, following Arpaio’s conviction for imposing a reign of racial profiling terror against Latinos and for the systematic mistreatment of prisoners in his custody.
Trump pardoned Scooter Libby, the former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, who was involved in the outing of a CIA agent. Libby was convicted in 2007 of perjury, lying to FBI agents, and obstruction of justice.
Trump did not follow Justice Department recommendations in issuing his pardons. Both Arpaio and Libby were convicted, and neither man ever expressed even the tiniest amount of penitence – the bedrock requirement for one to even be CONSIDERED the honor of a pardon. Trump just behaved like a third world dictator and used the imposing power of the presidential pardon to help right-wing criminals out of their legal problems.
Likewise, Trump’s reckless, irresponsible behavior and childish temper tantrums are a threat to America’s national security. The bizarre and childish way that Trump has threatened nuclear war against foreign nations and undermined and subverted the essential diplomatic functions and authority of federal agencies, including the United States Department of State has heightened the risk of hostilities involving weapons of mass destruction and needlessly placed millions of American lives at risk.
Any ONE of the shameful circumstances listed above would be enough to justify impeachment hearings, however, there’s now more than half a dozen reasons to impeach him! When are the overpaid wastrels in Congress going to stop loafing about and actually START DOING THEIR JOBS?
